Computer upgrade with Transport Management System

We require more up to date computers and sophisticated software to control the diversity of transport, journeys and increasing numbers of people that we handle, and also to enable us to log and supply the increasing amount of information and detail that funders and public bodies now require.

  • Need

Estimates are that our area has in the region of 60,000 people over the age of 65, with in excess of 25,000 over 85. We want to make our services available to a much larger proportion of these, and improve the health and welfare of the individuals and the region generally. Transport is one of the most important aspects of any organisation and often the last thing considered. Some of our service users are other registered charities that rely on our vehicles and expertise to fulfil their aims.

The amount of paperwork and administration is increasing in line with our increase in service user numbers and consequently our need for an efficient and flexible computer system is essential. With the current increased dependency on the voluntary sector, and the stringent cuts in statutory responsibility, it is imperative that organisations like ours do not fail. People are living longer and it is very important to consider their changing needs, and ensure that we are there for them.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Make our Charity more efficient and so keep charges to users to a minimum and not prohibitive.

» Have a computer system that optimises vehicles, fuel and drivers and does not waste these valuable resources.

    What success will look like

Success will be from increasing our membership and maintaining our charges at their current level, even with the massive increases in fuel costs taking place.

    Aim 2

Be in a postion to appeal to Funders for Grants and Tendering Bodies for contracts with confidence.

» Make our administration more efficient, professional and attractive to those bodies that we depend on for our future prosperity, and survival.

    What success will look like

Success will be new funders coming on board with an increase in grants, and successful contract bids.

    Aim 3

We want to make more peoples lives pleasant and fun, and as a result healthier in their later years.

» Get more users out into the community, to enjoy the activites and freedom this presents.

    What success will look like

Success will be an increase in the numbers of excursions underataken, numbers of passengers taken, and happy repeat users.

  • Impact

Community activities reduce isolation, provide friendships, build confidence, and improve or maintain physical and mental health and wellbeing. We log how many passengers we have transported and where to. We then assess any gaps in the service that we provide. We ask a variety of service users to complete a simple questionnaire twice yearly for feedback. This highlights any areas for improvement, any problems that clients have faced allows honest feedback, input and ideas to come from them.

Sammy Community Transport Limited has been in existence over 35 years and has always spread its resources as thinly as it can. Serving the elderly and disadvantaged of the area there is a careful balance to be struck in keeping the fees charged to our clients at a minimum that they could afford, against the need to provide continuity in our activities. We will continue to operate as long as we can show that there is a need, and as long as we adjust to social change.

Donors can be kept informed on the installation of the equipment and the impact on our operations by email, including any reports showing our activities, and anticipated improvements to service.

  • Background

We not only cover the main areas of Bognor Regis, Selsey and Chichester, but also smaller local and rural village which are not served by other forms of transport. We aim to reduce social exclusion and isolation that these vulnerable and often forgotten members of our community may well face while maximising the potential for their independence and continuing healthcare.

Many of our service users are on a fixed or low income, elderly, frail and isolated. By using our service they are able to participate more fully in everyday activities such as shopping or visiting the GP. This means that our service users are able to stay independent which in turn improves their quality of life.
These improvements sometimes have an additional (though often unseen) value to their carers and families by providing respite periods throughout the day.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

In 2007 we provided essential transport to 10,477 elderly and disabled service users to where they needed or wanted to go while in 2008 we were able to provide the same services for 13,224 passengers. . In 2009 this had increased to over 21,000 passengers. We have been serving the community since 1973, and we are expanding to include other villages not yet helped. We are confident in our ability to take on the added responsibility.
