A new beginning for street children in Nepal
This project will provide a home and the chance of a new beginning for street children in Chitwan, Nepal. With an estimated 200 street children in this area there is a definite need to provide a service to help. We will run this project for 1 year prior to the build of our permanent home in Chitwan.
1 year pilot and then permanent home for street children
With approx 200 street children in this area alone, there is a real need to provide an opportunity for these children to escape the dangers of the streets and offer them the chance they deserve for a happy and fulfilling life. Life on the streets presents a world of problems, with these children often subject to abuse and exploitation; turning to begging, stealing, prostitution and drugs to survive.
Our Sansar's home for street children will provide more than just shelter. With children who have had to face so many issues and hardships at such a young age it's really important that we provide the support of psychologists and social workers to allow them to work through these issues. We will ensure the children have the opportunity to gain an education; providing skills training alongside this will encourage these children to see options away from the money they make on the streets.
To provide shelter to initially 6 Street Children in Chitwan increasing to 20 in 2013
Activities» We will provide a home to accomodate initially 6 children increasing to 20 in 2013 along with the necessary support staff to look after them.
Success will be the safe housing of initially 6 children in our home and off of the streets away from harm.
To provide educational opportunities to street children along with skills training
Activities» We are working in partnership with local schools who will provide education for the children.
» We are working with the Chamber of Commerce who will assist in arranging skills training and internships for older children with local businesses.
Success will be enrolling the children in school, having them attend, go into further education, training or internship to provide them with skills needed for future employment.
To rehabilitate street children back into society
Activities» We will reunite the children with their colse or extended families wherever possible
» We will provide the much needed support of social workers and psychologists for the children
Success will be reuniting the children with their close or extended families where possible and appropriate, and children living happy and independent lives in the future.
This project aims to reunite these children with their families where possible and appropriate. With the support of social workers to facilitate this long term progression we would hope that children who can return to their families will receive the support they need to do so. For those children who this is not an option for, we will look to their extended family.
By providing education and skills training these children will become employable and will not need to return to the streets
One of the big risks to such a project is the acceptance of the children's home from the community. We are engaging and communicating with the community, local organisations, authorities and schools to manage this risk. This pilot project will be held in rented premises to allow for the possibility of the community rejecting the home. Following completion of this project we will be building a home, this rental allows us to ensure a safe and appropriate location for the longer term home.
All data and case studies will be compiled into quarterly reports which will be made available to internal staff the donors. We will also be sharing our findings and best practices with our stakeholders both in the UK and Nepal. We will also be publishing articles and a newsletter with updates.

We decided on Chitwan as the location of our home as it's a district in Nepal where there is little support available for street children. With approx 200 street children in the area there is a real need for help. It's important to Our Sansar to place our projects in communities where they have little support and assistance available to them, be it from NGOs, government or other organisations.
The street children themselves will benefit from this project. The presence of street children and their activities causes greater problems within the community and to reduce the number of street children will benefit the community as a whole.
In addition we will be employing Nepalese staff so there will be job creation as a result of this project for skilled workers. The local schools will benefit as well as we will be providing a UK teacher to the home and to the schools.
We have done a lot of research on this project and have engaged with the community and other NGOs in the area. We have had very positive feedback and a lot of support from other NGOs and local organisations who agree our approach is sustainable. We work with the local community to develop sustainable programmes, with the intention that long term they will be able to take full ownership of the projects.
