Project information

Community Channel:

Community Channel is a UK-wide digital television, online and mobile platform that gives a platform to charities, communities and marginalised groups.
We want to create a network of community story-tellers, film-makers and reporters across the UK to capture the stories and news in our communities.

April 2011 - March 2014

  • Need

Communities, marginalised groups, young people and small charities cannot easily make their voices heard. They struggle to access mainstream media, or to cut through in the digital world. In parallel, the media find it difficult to access communities, and are cutting back on budgets to do so.
Yet the need for communities to have a voice, be heard and engaged is increasing. This is needed at local, regional, national and even global levels.

Our vision for a network of story-tellers, film-makers and reporters will enable communities to have a voice - to create professional and compelling stories and news, and to distribute these to mainstream media and through digital media. Community Channel will showcase strong high-profile content from across the country, aggregating the themes, issues and news of importance to communities. Media Trust, which owns the channel, will provide media mentors and volunteers, training and support.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To establish a network of community reporters, film-makers and story-tellers across the country.

» Launch the pilot in London in April 2011 with funding from City Bridge Trust for 120 Community Reporters, and a London Community News programme.
» Launch a second pilot in September 2011 in England, and secure funding for further projects.

    What success will look like

Success will be an established network across the country, with the ability to be self-sustaining through grassroots digital media enterprise.

    Aim 2

To ensure that the voices and passions of our communities are heard, locally and across the UK.

» Ensure content is distributed widely to local, national and global media, including on the dedicated Community Channel. Create associated pr.

    What success will look like

Success will be a measurable increase in the amount and range of community voices, stories and news covered in our media.

    Aim 3

To change people's lives and communities through the power of media.

» Ensure that media content coming from communities influences positive change for individuals and communities.

    What success will look like

Success will be measurable positive changes in people's lives and communities as a result of the project.

  • Impact

We will ensure that the infrastructure is in place to enable long-term continued voice for communities at a local and national level, including local community news hubs, and a network of grassroots digital media entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs. We will grow strong partnerships between communities and the media, building positive interdependency and trust.
We will engage both in measuring and researching success, and developing further strategies for sustainability.

We have a detailed risk plan for the pilot in London.
Risks include quality of content, lack of engagement of media industry, and long-term funding. However, we have consulted widely and have many years of experience and partnerships in this field, so are positive we can manage risk.

Quarterly reports that include a range of video, audio and print reporting, and that reflect the impact on communities and the media.
