Experience of reducing corruption in universities
To share with people from other African countries the successful experience of working in Cameroonian universities to reduce corruption, so that they can start similar projects.
April 2011 - December 2011
Charity information: International Governance Institute
High levels of corruption in universities in African countries (specifically, Kenya, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe).
It will share successful experience in Cameroon with civil society organisations working on governance and democracy in other countries. Materials and methods used in Cameroon will be made available to the delegates from other countries. The delegates will then return to their own countries, empowered to start similar projects through their local IGI organisation.
To share and analyse best practice in fighting corruption.
Activities» Seminars on location in Cameroon
» Fact-finding visits to universities where the programme has been run successfully.
What success will look like
Success will be when the delegates at least two of the other countries (i.e. not Cameroon) establish similar projects in their own country.
Long-term projects in the universities of at least two additional countries, leading to local university staff trained in anti-corruption methods and a measurable reduction in fraud and corruption in the universities.
That the attendees are unable to set up a similar projects in their own countries. We have dealt with this by inviting leading representatives from countries with an active IGI organisation, which will have local support and support from the UK central organisation.
Full report on the workshops, seminars and visits at the end of the project (i.e. September 2011). Follow-up report a year later on progress with projects in beneficiary countries.

Cameroon where 40% of the population are below 25, with a booming tertiary education sector. Unfortunately, like many similar African countries it has high levels of corruption.
University workers, students and the wider population in Kenya, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Anti-corruption workers will be trained. Loss of funds through corruption will be reduced. There will therefore be more funds available for legitimate use in developing the universities. Also, students will not have to suffer the negative role models of fraud and corruption at an impressionable stage in their personal development.
We have grass-roots organisations capable of implementing such projects in these countries, combined with expert advice from UK. We have successful experience of running such projects in Cameroon and can now leverage that across Africa.
