North Coast Community Development Project

We are aiming to expand the North Coast Leisure Centre's program of activities and pool of transferable skills to function fully as a 'healthy' hub for the wider community. To do this we need to upgrade facilities, especially with a focus on disabled access and also appoint a development officer.

  • Need

We are addressing many issues with the project, such as the problems faced by an ageing population, the isolation of highland rural life, poor opportunities - both socially and in employment and training - for younger people and the increasing problems associated with an unhealthy lifestyle such as obesity, heart problems, diabetes and substance abuse.

By increasing the activities and opportunities at the centre we aim to cater for everyone in the wider community in some way and offer different solutions to these problems other than are offered by government agencies and the NHS.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Improving facilities for the elderly and disabled.

» Improved access including the installation of a pool chair lift.
» New facilities in changing area including specialized room with adult changing table.
» Staff training to enable NCLC to become centre of excellence for physical therapy.
» New exercise classes aimed at the less physically able such as aquacise, tai chi, chair-based exercise.

Success will be... increasing range and uptake of activities to enable us to claim to be a centre of excellence.

  • Impact

Improved physical and mental well-being across the wider community amongst less able, taking GP and hospital referrals. The referral figures should be evidence in themselves.

Access to the centre via public transport is an issue - we will be linking up with Transpost For Tongue, a local charity to solve this problem - they currently have two vehicles for community use with wheelchair facilities.

The Community Development Officer will draft a quarterly report and will be available to speak on this at any time.
