Safe Drinking Water

To give all of the families that we support access to safe drinking water by providing them with a water filter so that they can drink clean water that is free from disease

  • Need

Most of the children at our project do not have access to safe drinking water; the only alternative is to drink dirty, dangerous water, which frequently makes them ill. During the rainy Guatemalan summer of 2008, our children were becoming increasingly sick from the contaminated water that they were drinking rendering them too ill to attend school and in some cases hospitalized with diseases such as Typhoid

Distributing water filters to each family.

We found a company who can provide the Ecofiltro that are easy to use, durable and relatively cheap. This piece of equipment is vital as it ensures they have a constant supply of clean drinking water.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To ensure that all of our children and their families have access to safe drinking water

» Buying the Ecofiltro water filter and distributing them to all of the families that our Foundation supports, making sure they are able to use them

    What success will look like

Success will be when every family has access to safe drinking water in their home and no more people get ill from drinking dangerous dirty water.

  • Impact

The long term changes will be improved health and greater access to education for our students and their families which will be demonstrated in an increase in school attendance and a decrease in healthcare bills.

Through education we can break the cycle of poverty and these children will be empowered for the long term.

The only risk would be if a filter didn't work properly but we will continue to maintain good relations with the supplier so that if this happens we will be able to replace it free of charge.

At times a fluctuation to the exchange rate has caused issues but this can work for or against us.

Throughtout the project we could keep donors informed as to its progress and once it is complete and every family has access to safe water we can send letters, photos and quotes from our families expressing their satisfaction and gratitude as well as explaining the impact it's had.

  • Background

Our project is in Guatemala in the valley of Jocotenango about 10 miles from Antigua.

Most of our familes live on the steep hill-side of Vista Hermosa which is prone to mudslides in the rainy season. The area is surrounded by volcanoes some of which are active.

Our families live in make-shift corrugated iron houses some with mud floors. It is not uncommon for upto ten people to live in one or two rooms.

The whole community which includes babies, children, young people, adults, and the elderly alike.

With improved health our children will have far greater access to education. A man local to our project said

"If education improves in Jocotenango, I improve, Azotea improves, tourism reduces violence, the whole town improves and reduces it sleeper community characteristics"

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Because we already support and have developed good relationships with these families. We educate and feed their children in our schools, and provide healthcare, shelter, psychological help and general support to the community.

A few years ago we distributed water filters to all 227 families supported by our Fondation but these filters need replacing every few years and are now we support an additional 38 families who are also in need of water filters.
