  • Need

Older people in residential/nursing care are in many ways society's most excluded group. Up to 50% have clinically severe depression. By 2015 the number of people living with dementia in Gateshead will increase by 14% to 2,600.

Studies indicate that care home residents spend only 3% of their time in constructive activity. We want to provide opportunities for participation that will support their emotional and creative needs in order to improve their quality of life and wellbeing.

We will work with professional artists who are experienced in working with vulnerable older people and particularly those with dementia. We will develop and run projects in the three care homes that are tailored to the needs and interests of the residents and encourage their partners and families to become involved.

Workshops will take place on a weekly basis over the course of a year. Care staff will be encouraged to participate and to continue to support creative activity between sessions.
