Mending Broken Hearts

At the moment, there's no cure for a broken heart. Once your heart muscle is damaged by a heart attack, it can never fully recover. But there is hope.

Your support will help to fund groundbreaking research that could begin to literally 'mend broken hearts' in as little as ten years time.

10 years

  • Need

When we have a heart attack, a portion of our heart muscle is damaged or dies. Right now, we can't repair it. Damage to our hearts is permanent.

For some people this can lead to heart failure, and over three quarters of a million people in the UK are living with it every day.

Chronic tiredness, shortness of breath, palpitations, swollen ankles, lack of appetite, anxiousness and depression are just some of the symptoms previously active people struggle with for the rest of their lives.

Heart regeneration is possible in nature. We know this because if a zebrafish damages it's heart, it is able to regrow. If we can find and harness the key genes and chemical messengers, in the right cells, at the right time, we could find a way to help our hearts fix themselves. Just like a broken bone will heal.

We hope to invest in world-leading stem cell research and developmental biology to see whether we can repair or replace damaged or dead heart tissue with new, healthy tissue.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To be funding early clinical trials in as little as five years time.

» We are committed to spending 50 million in the next five years to m make this happen.

    What success will look like

Scientists will help us develop up to two Research Centres, where most of the research will take place. We will be funding the work of some of the world's top scientists.

  • Impact

Mending Broken Hearts could change the lives of the majority of people in the UK living with heart failure, including...

The thousands of people living with a poor blood supply to limbs and vital organs.

People with heart valve disease, as we learn more about how to repair valves.

Children born with some forms of simple congenital heart disease.

Thousands of families and carers currently coping with heart disease.

There is a risk that we may not raise our target of £50 million. We have addressed this by using a diverse range of fundraising methods and harbouring high profile support.

Donors will receive postal updates on the progress of the appeal.

  • Background

We will establish up to three Centres of Regenerative Medicine Research Excellence in the UK . These will be existing research institutions able to demonstrate that will extra investment (in people or equipment, for example) they have the potential to excel in this area of science.

The thousands who could otherwise die every year from heart attacks.

The 2.5 million people living with heart disease in the UK.

The millions more at risk due to factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Children born with some forms of congenital heart disease.

The families who would otherwise have to cope with the death of a loved one.

The millions of carers of those currently incapacitated by heart disease.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

The BHF is the UK leader in heart research, funding 55% of heart research – more than the NHS.

BHF research funding has contributed to many of the major breakthroughs in the prevention and treatment of heart disease including statins, pacemakers and clot-busters.

The scientific world believes that heart repair is a solvable biological problem.

We therefore aim to use our expertise and the funds raised through this Appeal to mend broken hearts as quickly as possible.
