Orchard Meadow Art Room

To provide an early intervention programme for Orchard Meadow Primary School children and partner schools who need support to improve the students’ emotional wellbeing. We use art as therapy to help children discover their abilities and improve their learning, conduct and emotional behaviours.

  • Need

    Need

    Orchard Meadow is one of the most deprived areas for child poverty education and skills. The students have serious difficulties and are disengaged from mainstream education, disruptive or withdrawn. Some of the students are on the Special Educational Needs register, prime carers or children in care. Our project is addressing the problems these children are facing which is proving a barrier to them making positive choices for themselves and unable to fully engage with their educational programme.

    Solution

    Our programme helps vulnerable often traumatised children make better choices. We have a high pupil to practitioner ratio and use positive language of their worth and abilities. We use art as a therapeutic tool to help them explore their talents and skills. We empower the students to lead their own projects and support them to make positive decisions, which encourages a similar thought process in their daily lives. Our project encompass literacy and numeracy which supports the student.

    Aim 1

    To reduce exclusions and truancies for the participating schools

    Activities

    » Run weekly workshops which work with the young people improving their self esteem and confidence.
    » Run workshops which incorporate numeracy and literacy

    Success will be measured in partnership with the participating schools and collecting statistics from the Special need Coordinator on the beneficiaries.

    » To provide professional development for the staff delivering the project

    Success will be measured using the questionnaire which we conduct before and after attendance. We also will do case studies and feedback from the participating schools.


  • Impact

    Impact

    Our partner schools feedback to us on the increased confidence and aspirations of The Art Room children which lead to improved behaviour at school and reduced exclusions. This leads in turn to better qualifications at school, thus improving employment opportunities in later life. Greater confidence and improved social skills also enable these young people to make better life choices as they feel that they have wider opportunities open to them.

    Risk

    Risk: The Primary School could decide that they no longer have the space to house the Art Room. To mitigate this we keep in regular contact with the Head teacher and Governors and have regular meetings.
    Risk: We do not have enough funds to continue the project. To mitigate this we have applied to trusts and foundations, organised regular fundraising events and meet with the participating schools network of head teachers.

    Reporting

    We will invite donors to regular events where they will be able to learn and question more details about the project. We will send regular reports and results of our evaluation. We would also encourage donors to visit the project in action.

  • Background

    Location

    Our work in Orchard Meadow works in the Blackbird Leys and parts of Greater Leys which are one of the city’s most deprived areas. Blackbird Leys is in the top most deprived in the country for education (2.8%), skills (3.18%) and training (3.28%). Educational attainment of young people at GCSE is 15 % lower than the national average and even further behind the regional average. Child poverty is a key concern, Blackbird Leys is among the ten % worst-affected areas in England.

    Beneficiaries

    Children between ages 5-15 and their families. We have five partnerships with school in the area. The Art Room supports young people in areas of high social deprivation like Black Bird Leys, the poverty in these areas is self-evident. The areas where we work are in the top 10% for child poverty in the UK.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

    We have over ten years experience with working in this field and over that time we have developed our methodology with the support from Social Workers, Psychotherapists, teachers, Doctors and artists. We have a very strong training programme and have a team of dedicated professional staff. We have rigid policies sin place which are consistently reviewed and adhered to. We have a strong financial management with robust procedures in place. We work in partnership with other organisations.

    Catherine come from a teaching background and will manage the project at Orchard Meadow
