clouddog - Open Horizons Project
clouddog empowers disadvantaged young people aged 16-18 from inner city backgrounds in the UK and South Africa. We do this through our unique multicultural programme of environmental, conservation and community based experiences enabling them to build their self-knowledge, confidence and creativity
September 2013 - December 2014
We believe that the right to care about the planet is a universal one, regardless of socio-economic background. One of the biggest challenges for young people is poverty of aspiration. What greater aspiration could you give someone than a belief that they can positively change the future of the world?
clouddog delivers a 12 month programme for young people which includes one-to-one mentoring from senior City Executives, a self-led community volunteering project, ending with a trip of a lifetime to South Africa where they work on an environmental project. We take young people on a journey of change that results in them continuing to higher education, gaining employability skills, making a contribution to their community and becoming more aware of the environement locally and internationally.
Raise awareness of environmental issues and invite student led action oriented projects locally
Activities» Invite individual project proposals from students and support their implementation
» Coordinate bi-annual Community Acts of volunteering as team based activities.
» A three week immesion programme in southern Africa which includes hands on conservation work, trails and installing water for remote Zulu villages
Success will be... completed environmental projects at local level that benefit the community and its environment
Develop self awareness, confidence, organisation and leadership skills
Activities» Integrated in the activities of aim 1. Through structured hands on activities during 12mth programme students develop self-esteem, direction and focus
» Twleve months one-on-one mentoring from leading City institutions. A non disciplinary relationship to develop career aspirations, personal discipline
Success will be... young people who emerge from the 12 month programme as more confident, proactive, focused and positive in relation to their lives, their future and community
Beneficiaries of the clouddog programme will emerge as rounded community members, equipped with the confidence and skills to achieve their potential, to make a difference in their communities and to inspire others. This is often observed by teachers and parents of past clouddog beneficiaries.
Funding - we only recruit and commit to a new cycle when we know that we can support 12 students over the full 12 month period; we constantly seek new funding to broaden our reach and offer the opportunity to more young people and ensure they have a focused and quality experience
Mentors or and leaders of the immersion programme are CRB checked and receive training
We also strive to make the best match between young person or group and the mentor/team or leader
Can be through various media formats (video, texts, emails) as the students complete each structured component. All donors receive our regular newsletter. We also provide customised formal reporting requirements to major donors or sponsors.

We source our students from London, UK and Johannesburg, South Africa. 100% of the activities take place between inner city areas in London and predominantly in Johannesburg, Guateng and Kwa Zulu Natal province in South Africa.
Young people from inner city schools of deprived areas in the UK and southern Africa, particularly London and Johanesburg. These students often do not have access to many of the elements the programme offers such as: mentoring by professionals, opportunity to meet and work with other young people with a different background, a 12 month programme that is focused on them as individuals and on their development, facilitating a sense of achivement and increased confidence
clouddog is a unique programme that deals with all these components of development in a holistic way as we do.
We have a five year successful track record of delivering programmes. Over 60% of our beneficiaries change their University course after completing our programme to one of social, environmental or conservation based content.
Many students that are not planning to attend University change their aspirations and decide to enrol.
