  • Need

    Need

Many people with a learning disability find it difficult to make and sustain friendships and close personal relationships. Traditional dating and friendship agencies have not served people with additional support needs very well. Access to the internet and use of the web is also more difficult for people who themselves do not have well developed literacy skills.

    Solution

We will provide support to people with a learning disability wanting to make friends and develop relationships through matching and linking up dates-n-mates members and organising a range of social events and activities
We will develop an accessible website that people can use to find out about what is on offer and to find out who they might like to meet.
We will develop the confidence of people in using the web by helping them to access and use our new site

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To develop and maintain an accessible website for 'dates-n-mates'

    Activities

» We will work with Glasgow charity, Common Knowledge (www.ckuk.org.uk) to identify the information our new website it will contain
» We will commission Common Knowledge to set up the new site for us in an accessible format, including audio and graphic cues for people using it
» We will launch the first phase of our new site at our Valentine's event with a presentation from Common Knowledge and opportunities to use it
» We will refine the site further after our launch to include additional functions, like a would like to meet section and online shop,

Success will be having a website that is reported as being accessed by more than 75% of our members (currently 170+ people) during the course of the first 6 months it is available

    Aim 2

To develop confidence in dates-n-mates members in using the web

    Activities

» Provide coaching and learning opportunities to members in practicising using the web
» Run a series of 6 short workshops for people with a learning disability to try out, using the dates-n-mates site as a learning tool

Success will be members who have accessed training reporting increased confidence in using the web through a survey at the end of the coaching input

  • Impact

    Impact

The project will increase the confidence of people with a learning disability involved with dates-n-mates in using the web and enhance the opportunities to make contact with others to make friendships and relationships
We will demonstate the success of the project by tracking the use of the site by members on three occasoions over 12 months and by the increase in the number of recorded friendships and relationships between members during this period.

    Risk

There could be potential risks to people with a learning disability who use the site being targetted for abuse. We have put a number of safety processes in place for all members to ensure this is not the case e.g. initial contact between members will only be organised through our office and not directly through the site.

    Reporting

Donors to this will receive a monthly electronic report on progress of activities to achieving our aims
