Orphan Girls Education/Schooling
To help vulnerable girls in Ethiopia get an education which will help them lead an independent life and lift themselves out of poverty
Charity information: LUCIA (Life Uplifted by Change In Africa)
Gender divide is one of the greatest obstacles of socio-economic development. Forced marriage, FGM, and abduction are common practices that oppress Oromo women.
Families are often unable to afford to educate all children so daughters rarely receive the privilege of schooling. Education levels of women are lower affecting their ability to earn a sufficient livelihood.
Education will give the girls the tools to be able to support themselves in the future and the ability to make formative decisions.
LUCIA’s programme intends to reach out to the most vulnerable children who would otherwise have absolutely no-one to care for them.
LUCIA aims to provide schooling for 30 girls
Activities» Raise funds to provide school uniforms, books, school fees and safe transportation to and from school
» Use NGO partners - Siiqqee Women's Development Association (SWDA) to monitor the children's attendance and progress
Success will be measured by the grades achieved by the girls when they complete their education.
The women will become more independent and self sufficient. They will gain confidence in their ability to make choices and to evaluate those choices.
Schools will have more learning materials such as books to use in the future.
Children who do not have the ability to reach high grades will receive vocational training.
There are certain things that are beyond LUCIA’s control such as abduction and political change.
We would hope that educating the girls would help them become less vulnerable to abduction.
However if, for example, the government decides that girls should not longer be educated there may be little we can do.
Quarterly reports from NGO partners in Ethiopia will be posted on LUCIA’s website www.luciacharity.org.uk
Field trip visits to Ethiopia will check on progress and this will be reported in LUCIA’s newsletters.

LUCIA already has strong links with this area developed over the last five years including links with a small number of schools. LUCIA funded the office and playground equipment for one of these.
A student spent 7 months in the area in 2009 and she was able to report back on competence and integrity of the NGO. The placement was financed by LUCIA.
LUCIA has regular field trip by volunteers - who pay for them selves - each year to check on the projects
