IT IMPACT: IT as a medium to to track development

Some people witha learning disability do not use text so using symbols and photographs would be a very accessible method of them recognising their own achievement and development

    identifying the starting point and possibly slow development in indepent living skills


    by producing accessible quantifiable pictorial biased information about the development of individuals

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    Familiarise 10 adults with using IT/digital cameras.


    » Provide 4 hours per week of usage of IT to 10 people
    » Introduce as many IT packages and as many opportunities to use digital cameras through the day
    » to edit the materials to show development in all areas of day activities

    What success will look like

    Success will be...10 people having used IT and digital cameras to produce a log of achievement

    Aim 2

    to produce material on individual development and achievement


    » work to produce a monthly newsletter on what the individual has been doing identifying development and feelings towards them
    » work to develop/publish material on the website to promote achievement to externals
    » use the produced material to encourage and further plan developmental activities for individuals

    What success will look like

    Success will be...people demonstrating their achievement to parents/carers/funders

    Aim 3

    to use participants as mentors to new people going through the projet


    » have programme of "show and tell" so that new people know what they are doing
    » Provide the oppportunity to develop the concept of "show and tell" to how to use the IT equipment
    » provide te time for the new user to feedback to their mentor on what was useful and what wasnt

    What success will look like

    Success will be...people working together as peers with minimal input from staff

  • Impact


    the project will give individuals a tool that enables them to be more independent in the planning and choice of what they do in the future.

    This will be demonstrated by individuals being central to planning activitie and taking control and communicating their needs clearly.


    the security of IT/digital equipment.

    There ae proocols about locking up and usage in place


    through wesites and the produced newsletter. The pilot will be written up into a standalone document identifying success in challenges

    The Opportunity Centre runs day time activities for adults with Learning Disabilities. It is a former shop with 2 main rooms and a small office type room. It is at a coss section of 2 main roads in Edmonton.


    local residents with learning disabilities who generally have a history of non achievement and non ability.

    Enfield Mencap already works with adults give day opportunities to some local residents. The Opportunity Cente is a known location for many of them, with there being a comfort about undertaking activities that they have not had access to previously.
