  • Need

To improve the number and calibre of teachers and others working in education and educational research in countries where education can improve the lives and prospects of so many children and adults through teaching or advancing educational policy.

We believe that education is one of the most important ways of reducing poverty and helping people to face challenges of the future.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To offer Masters or PhD scholarships to academically excellent students

» Provide flights, accommodation, funding for fees and living costs for a student to live and study in London

Success will be Centenary Scholarship recipients successfully completing their studies at the highest level and returning to their countries to improve education

  • Impact

Scholarship recipients will return to their country and improve education thoughout their career. This can be through providing quality teaching to children to advocating education for all or even being involved or advising educational policy for example.

There is a risk that students could not complete their studies but this is prevented by only awarding scholarships to the highest calibre of students and providing quality pastoral care whilst at the Institute.

Funders of Centenary Scholarships receive an invite to our annual donor reception where they have the opportunity to meet scholarship recipients. Text and video updates are also posted on our website and donors receive our bi-annual magazine including updates on all of the IOE's current projects.

  • Background

Located in central London, the IOE has a long history of welcoming international students, and currently there are students from 75 countries undertaking courses here. Our dedicated provision includes an international student welfare officer, an international learning and teaching coordinator, and academic and professional literacy support.

Studying at the IOE is only the beginning of a scholar’s journey and this support can benefit many thousands of people over the course of a career in teaching or research.

Existing IOE alumni around the world include education ministers and ministry officials, politicians, authors, university presidents and international development organisation officials. We are confident that our Centenary Scholars will be equipped to follow in these footsteps towards positions of influence for change.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

The IOE is one of the world’s premier graduate schools of education. With an unrivalled breadth and depth of specialised knowledge, it is the UK’s only institution entirely dedicated to research and teaching in education and related social sciences. The recent Research Assessment Exercise rated us the UK’s best and biggest for educational research. The results show that the IOE has more than twice as many world-leading (4*) scholars in education as any other UK university.
