New build extensions- equipment store; enhanced community cafe with childrens’ play area and exercise room; a meetings area – all will provide more activity space to mitigate the excess demand we face. Specifically targetted are young mothers with children, senior citizens and handicapped people

An excess of demand for the community-based activities the Centre currently offers and the other activities which are requested but which we have to turn away because of space and and time-tabling limitations. The excess is because we are complementary to, not in competion with, what other Centres in and around Penicuik provide.
It will increase the activity space and our ability to use the building's facilities more flexibly and effectively. It will better enable us to meet the interests of young mothers and their offspring, senior citizens and people with handicaps
To open up the already welcoming and inclusive atmosphere of the Ladywood Centre to more people.
Activities» Offer a healthy eating experience, with practical lesson to young mothers
» Offer more health promoting activities and rehabilitative exercise regimes to senior citizens and others (referals from Penicuik medical practices)
» Open a Credit Union (parts of Penicuik are regarded as deprived).
Success will be...measured by the Centre's utilasation increasing from the present 60% to 75/80%
It will enhance the image of Penicuik in the eyes of its citizens and vistors. It will strenghen the Midlothian Council's acceptance of the Foundation as a partner in the provision of activities and services which are complementary to their statutory obligations
1. that we are unable to obtain the funding for the envisaged building programme; We are approaching several Trusts for part-funding but our own contribution will remain small because presently income exceeds expenditure by c £2000pa.
2. that we fail to maintain our "pay our way" operating principle (e.g. bad weather affects our football pitch income) so endangering our lease conditions. We have contingency small fund raising events to compensate
Donors will have a quarterly summary report of the progress of the building programme including its effect on the Centre's overall programme. Any donor will be made very welcome (visiting anonymously or not) to see what we do because our mainly Volunteer workforce are hospitable and welcoming.

Formerly Scotland's paper-making centre and home to Edinburgh Crystal, Penicuik has now no major employers. Compensating the resultant blight of disadvantage is the goodwill from many citizens in their community work; cultural and sporting ambitions of numerous groups/clubs which match any elsewhere; a long history and fascinating industrial heritage; and numerous attractive buildings and walkways within an unmatched scenic location by the river North Esk and in sight of the Pentland Hills.
Penicuik has a population of about 16,000, The social mix is considerable with some parts, notably the social housing areas, having a high incidence of single parent families and senior citizens living alone. In the newer private-housing estates there are obvious signs of greater wealth. The Foundation has a policy of inclusivity meaning that all Penicuik residents and visitors will benefit from the project.
