Community Construction

We currently rent a workshop that provides limited facilities for the teaching of disadvataged young people in construction skills, glasswork and woodwork. We have been given the opportunity to purchase this building enabling more training to take part as well as a community space to rent out.

  • Need


    With public sector funding cuts inevitable the organisation faces a recution in income and purchasing this building would help provide a sustainable source of income through the community spaces we wish to develop, provide a long term investment to add to the existing portfolio of properties the charity has and enable more disadvantaged young people to access community based edcuation thus improving their life chances and helping them take the first steps towards education and employment.


    This buildign would enable us to offer edcution and training to an increased number of difficult to engage young people aged 14-19 all of which fit into the NEET category and would also allow us to offer more tailored support to the homeless clients we provide supported housing to. With the development of the first floor (currently unused) a community meeting, exhibition and arts space could be accessed by other local community based groups and schools strengthening local links and partnerships

    Provide increased learning opportunities to disadvantaged young people


    » Offer additional courses to an increased number of clients
    » Continue to develop new ways of engaging with disengaged young people accessing the project

    Success will be an additional percentage of learners attending and completing educational opportunities

    To provide a community facility that can be accessed from a countywide basis


    » Provide affordable, rentable spaces to the local community
    » Offer a wide variety of community based activies
    » Further develop and build upon our existing relationship within the community and engage with more local schools, businesses and individuals

    Success will be the building being accessed by organsiations/individuals from outside the Stroud area

    Provide more opportunities for disadvantaged young people to improve their self esteem


    » Offer more life skills training
    » Provide more opportunties for clients to have personal accountability and responsibility
    » Strenghten the young persons ability to make informed decisions in realtion to their personal, socail and emotional wellbeing

    Success will be indicated by the number of young people becoming engaged in education and/or training and the number of those moving onto further education or employment

    » Improve the environmental efficiency of the building thus reducing long term running costs

    Success will be measured by an increase in sustainable income as well as an increase in diversity and quantity of those accessing the community spaces

  • Impact


    The long term changes the project will provide include improved access to education and training thus leading to improved employment opportunities for disadvantaged and disengaged young people. The opportunity for this group to improve their life chances and improve physical, social and emotional areas of their lives. The success will be monitored and evaluated throughout the time spent with the organisation and will be clearly demonstrated in the next Ofsted report


    There is a risk that the local community may object to the development of the building. This will be dealt with by consultation with the local community to ensure they are informed at all times and to extract useful information from them. Also there will be a consultation process with the users of the facility to ensure that a two way process of communication is in place for the same purposes as outlined previously


    Donors will be kept up to date via monthly updates (either by email or hard copy depending on their preference) and there will also be a project progress posted on the organisation's website. We will of course provide updates and information as per individual donors requirements also.

  • Background


    Stroud is a market town and civial parish in the county of Gloucestershire. Stroud acts as the centre for surrounding villages and small market towns.


    Five of the wards that make up Storud District fall within the top 30% of the Multiple Indices of Deprivation in Gloucestershire and within the top 10% for particular indices (eg health, income, employment, education). All feature within the top 20% in the indices of depriavation for children. 100% of the young people who will benefit from the project fall within the NEET category and all are suffering or have suffered some form of social exlcusion. A % are also experiencing homelessness

    Why Us?

    The organisation is a charitable company limited by guarantee, incorporated in June 1979 and registered as a charity in November 1982. It has provided training and support to young people at risk of social exclusion since it began and also provides supported housing for homeless and vulnerable young people as an accredited Foyer. The outcomes achieved though its education function remain amongst the best in the county
