Improve Nutritional awareness of those with cancer

Implement Nutritional Training Programme for people with cancer. This empowers them with nutritional knowledge, improves their nutritional state, brings beneficial change in nutrition for family members, helps reduce incidence of obesity, reduces the risk factor of cancer by unhealthy eating.

  • Need

    Need

    Research has shown that the incidence of some cancers is higher in those who have an unhealthy lifestyle, i.e. eating a high fat diet, excessive alcohol and lack of exercise. The aim of the project is twofold. 1) to improve the nutritional state of those with a diagnosis of cancer and 2) influence the eating habits of others, with the aim of reducing some incidences of cancer.

    Solution

    Those undergoing radiotherapy & chemotherapy may develop an aversion to some food. The nutritional awareness training will assist them to look at nutrition as part of their healing process, thereby improving their nutritional state. Family members will also take part in the training process and be made aware of the importance of eating the correct nutrients and the types of food and mixtures of food that contain them.

    Improving the nutritional state of people with a diagnosis of cancer

    Activities

    » Teaching people how to make nutritional juices & smoothies for those who are unable to cope with the smell and preparation of their previous diet
    » Teaching individuals the components of different food needed for health. This will include the difference between, protein, carbohydrates & fats.

    Success will be measured by feedback from those who have been taught the importance of changing to eating healthily with a better balanced diet.

    To reduce the incidence of some cancer by nutritional awareness

    Activities

    » Teaching individuals foods that are beneficial to health and those which are not.

    Success will be by positive feedback by a diary record kept by those who are changing their eating habits


  • Impact

    Impact

    For those with cancer by improving their nutritional state, it will enable the individuals cope better with some of the side effects of chemotherapy. For those who are under-nourished due to bad eating habits, they will have less toxins, improved energy, improved nutritional state which will help reduce the incidence of them having cancers which are known to be due to unhealthy diets.

    Risk

    Not achieving the funding to implement the project. This risk has been looked at and a strategy formed to try and obtain other funding streams.

    Reporting

    An audit of the training course and its outcomes will be produced in a report form which all donors will receive at the end of the project.

    This charity has over 22 years experience in providing support services for people with cancer and what we have learned over the years is that those with this diagnosis do want to bring about a change in their eating habits and they are very concerned that members of their family may also develop cancer.
