To redevelop the school library to create an attractive and well equipped environment for improving literacy among teenage boys. The school has developed an innovative literacy campaign and this project will give the school the resources it needs to inspire boys to read for pleasure
July 2011 - September 2011
Charity information: Parents and Friends Christ's College Finchley
The relatively poor performance in boys’ literacy is a well recognized national problem. Reading tests in 2007 showed that one third of Year 8 had made no progress in their reading skills and 22 students’ reading age had actually decreased. A survey of Year 8 students then revealed that 40% had not read a book for pleasure since they had arrived in Year 7. Unfortunately the library is currently in a dilapidated condition. This undermines efforts to position reading as pleasurable and rewarding.
Reading is unfortunately not seen as cool or rewarding by teenage boys. The school has developed a whole-school Literacy Campaign to promote reading for pleasure which has involved pupils, parents and teachers. International research has shown that a well equipped and well managed school library can make a real difference to this type of campaign. The project will involve improving the presentation the library and enhancing the book stock to attract boys to reading for fun.
To ensure that the library holds reading material that will motivate and interest boys in reading
Activities» Involve pupils in the selection of book stock through a book shop visit scheme - classes visit bookshops and discuss and agree selection for library
» Librarians supplement student choice with purchases of stock of books, magazines and audio books
Success will be..reading survey results show that more boys have read a book for pleasure.
To improve presentation of library stock to encourage library users to sample different books
Activities» Replace DIY shelving with specialist library shelving
Success will be...lending levels of library stock go up
To create an attractive and welcoming environment in the library
Activities» Redecorate and replace worn out carpeting
» New seating and reception area
» Repair heating and air conditioning units
Success will be...positive feedback from pupils
The project will help the school continue to make progress improving standards of literacy and general academic achievement. This will be demonstrated in the continued improvements in exam results and internal literacy assessments.
