Access All Areas
YMCA Cornwall provides accommodation and support for over 90 young homeless people each year. We currently have wifi access in parts of the main building but the accommodation blocks where the young people live do not have any. We want to rectify this by enabling wifi access across the whole site.
March 2011 - May 2011
Charity information: YMCA Cornwall
For many young people frustration about what they see as their future (or lack of it) can lead to them becoming angry and de-motivated with low self-esteem and low confidence and a general unwillingness to try. The homeless young people with whom we work come to us with a myriad of issue that they need to address. Often this may be the first home they call their own and feel safe in enabling them to have access to the Internet would mean a lot to them.
We support and challenge young people to address the issues in their life and to look to the future we encourage them to enrol at college and to seek employment access to the Internet in their own rooms/flats would enable this process to be easier for them and also give them the control of doing it for themselves . Giving the young people confidence in their own abilities will encourage them to think differently about their future and say to themselves “I can do it!”

What success will look like
Success will be having completed the work and testing the system to prove we have access across the site.
The project will enable youg people on site to access the Internet from the comfort of their own homes something that most people in the Country currently take for granted.
Success will be demonstrated by the numbers of young people each year accessing the Internet and a 15% increase in the numbers of young people finding work or accessing a college course because it is easier to find the jobs/complete home work.
There is a risk that due to the layout of the site and the age of some of the buildings that putting the hardware required in could take longer than we anticipate. We have all contractors on standby and a commitment from them to complete as quickly as possible.
We will complete a one off report highlighting the completion of the project and featuring interviews with current residents as to the benefits

Cornwall is a county many people think of as an area of outstanding beauty and an increasingly desirable life style choice for many people. There are, however, other factors that need to be kept in mind when considering the county. The European Union awarded Cornwall with Objective One status in international recognition of the disadvantages of the county in respect of income, employment, education and amenities compared with the remainder of the UK.
The project will benefit at least 90 disaffected young people per year who very often through family breakdown find themselves homeless. YMCA Cornwall has a long tradition of working with the needs of the community with a focus on young people. We are about improving their lives through mind, body and spirit to enable them to have a positive future and to make a positive contribution to their community.
Our Organisation has a tremendous reputation for providing accommodation and support for young people. We are considered the 'experts' for this particular age range within West Cornwall. We have a number of basic life skills lessons that we undertake with the young people before they are ready for the job market or college. This access would be the icing on the cake and enable us to provide a truly holistic service for our young people.
