Project information

"Increasing the quality of journeys on ReadiBus"

ReadiBus aims to replace the wheelchair restraining equipment used on our buses to maintain the quality of journeys provided to wheelchair users on our service.

The project will take the length of time it takes to secure the funding for the replacement equipment

  • Need

The replacement equipment is required because the current restraining equipment is showing signs of wear and equipment design has improved greatly since the last purchase made by ReadiBus both ergonomically and in terms of safety.

The problem will be solved with the new replacement restraining equipment being installed on every bus in our fleet.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Purchase replacement restraining equipment for our wheelchair users on our fleet of vehicles.

» Fundraise through a variety of methods, including The Big Give, applications to charitable trusts and sponsored runners in the Reading Half Marathon.

    What success will look like

Success will be...measured by the ability in terms of quantity and time it takes to purchase this restraining equipment.

  • Impact

The project will enable our wheelchair users who use our service (of which 30% of journeys made on our service are made using a wheelchair) to have their wheelchair safely secured during their journey on ReadiBus. Additionally, they will be able to travel in extra comfort through the use of this equipment.
The success of the project will be demonstrated by the use of this restraining equipment on our fleet of vehicles.

The time it takes to raise the necessary funding could take too long before the equipment needs to be replaced. We have tried to create a balanced funding portfolio, through applications to charitable trusts, use of The Big Give, legacies from users and sponsored runners in the Reading Half Marathon to enable us to reach the fundraising target.

Donors will receive a monthly email reporting on how we are progressing towards our target. As the fund increases, donors can receive further details on what stage of the bus equipment purchase we are at.

  • Background

Our project is primarily based in the Greater Reading area of Berkshire. Reading, some 40 miles west of London, has a population of 140,000 and is a key commercial centre in Southern England, providing key links with information technology and insurance services. Reading is one of the towns of greatest contrast in the country in terms of wealth and deprivation.

The beneficiaries of our project are people with restricted mobility who are unable to use the regular public transport buses in Reading who travel on our service in a wheelchair (31% of journeys made in 2009/10 were made in a wheelchair on ReadiBus. )

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Without our organisation, people with restricted mobility in Reading would have great difficulties or no access in getting out and about to retain their independence. Furthermore, our organisation was one of the first of its kind after its inception in October 1981. With the knowledge we have built up of providing our service for the last 29 years, we are well placed to identify the needs of our users to provide the best possible service to them.
