  • Need

    Need

Many patients receiving treatment have limited movement and experience considerable pain and discomfort during conventional physiotherapy. Hydrotherapy is medically recognised to be beneficial in providing an additional treatment which reduces pain and increases movement. In the area there is no free hydrotherapy treatment available only private facilities at up to £100 a session. Patients simply can’t afford to pay this amount.

    Solution

The Chilterns MS Centre is providing a hydrotherapy pool at the new Centre due to be completed in early 2012. Physiotherapy in the pool will be delivered in one-to-one sessions for severely disabled and in group sessions for less disabled. A rising floor will make it suitable for children, making access easier for severely disabled people in special wheelchairs. Treatment will help to alleviate symptoms by: improving movement, increasing muscle strength, reducing spasticity, etc.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To have a fully operational hydrotherapy pool by the second quarter of 2012

    Activities

» Raise the remaining funds to complete the project
» Recruit two qualified hydro- therapists

Success will be the pool in full use every day benefitting people who have MS and other debilitating conditions with patient records showing improvement.

    Aim 2

To improve the mobility and general health of over 600 people with MS and other conditions

    Activities

» Assess patients and provide a treatment plan to suit their individual needs
» Deliver 3,000 treatments in year one
» Deliver one –to-one and group sessions 6 days a week
» Use the Riverflow where appropriate to improve strength and cardiovascular exercise

Success will be the pool in full use every day benefitting people who have MS and other debilitating conditions with patient records showing improvement..

    Aim 3

Make the facility available for the treatment of other conditions

    Activities

» Work with local health professionals to receive referrals for treatment of: cerebral palsy, dementia, Parkinsons, Down’s etc.

Success will be the pool in full use every day benefitting people who have MS and other debilitating conditions with patient records showing improvement..

  • Impact

    Impact

The pool will be operational for many years, approximately 25 plus, before the need to consider updating or renewing. Patients receiving regular treatment will show improved health and mobility. Success will be demonstrated by the number of patient treatments delivered reported monthly. Patient’s regular assessments use recognised clinical assessment methods to measure improvements which will be a measure of success for individuals. Patients will benefit from the social aspect of using the pool.

    Risk

There is a risk the funds won’t be raised in time to complete the project, the pool will then have to be mothballed until funds are raised.

A loan has been secured to cover any shortfall to ensure the pool can be completed on time and become operational. However, this will add to the cost in the form of interest and is not ideal.

    Reporting

Donors to the project will receive a quarterly newsletter in addition to being invited to events throughout the year. Donors will be invited to visit the Chilterns MS Centre and attend the grand opening and open days. Major donors will be recognised on a donor recognition wall within the building.

  • Background

    Location

The Chilterns MS Centre, based in Halton Bucks, has been providing drug-free symptom management treatments and therapies for people with multiple sclerosis for 25 years. People from Buckinghamshire, Herts, Beds, Oxon and Berks attend the Centre for treatment. Over 500 people are registered to receive treatment. We estimate that within our catchment area there are potentially in excess of 2,000 people with MS who could benefit from treatment. We provide a range of 19 treatments and services.

    Beneficiaries

People with MS are referred to the Chilterns MS Centre for treatment by their GP or consultant. They can also self-refer. Multiple sclerosis is a degenerative, incurable condition for which there is no long-term treatment within the NHS. The pool will be made available for the treatment of other conditions such are: cerebral palsy, Down’s Syndrome, learning difficulties, post operative rehabilitation, dementia, Parkinsons.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Clinical staff at the Centre are very experienced in the treatment of MS and other neurological conditions. In 25 years the number of treatments delivered has grown. The number of patients being treated is limited only by the size of our current building. Two experienced hydrotherapists will be recruited to work alongside our existing staff. Hydrotherapy will complement existing treatments and provide patients in the area with the most comprehensive choice of treatments for their condition.
