ELCAP wishes to deliver the 'Steps' project that will provide children and young people with knowledge and understanding of community radio and will also boosts their Skills For Life and self esteem.

  • Need


    This programme of activity will enable us to interact with communities in need including new European communities, children/young people, and people from different backgrounds. Nelson is in the top ten percent deprivation in the country. Through these periods of regeneration funding community consultation has identified the need to improve the locals knowledge of the media industry and increase the skill base of local people and work to continuously to improve community cohesion.


    The project will:

    • Enable children and young people to take part in enjoyable learning activities, which they do not have access to at present.
    • Improve confidence, personal, social development and self esteem skills young people who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
    • Improve their chances of developing an interest in media communications and making radio programmes.
    • Provide opportunities for community cohesion.

    6 Week Training Workshops


    » • deliver a six week training and capacity building programme in 3 primary schools, one secondary and the college.

    Success will be over 100 young people will receive quality media workshops throughout the region.

  • Impact


    The project will:

    * Create role models who will participate in media communications and radio programmes, which will encourage other to take part and interest in such activities.
    * Increase the confidence and self esteem of disadvantaged children and young people to participate in media communication and community radio and thus increasing their opportunities to consider such routes for future training, further education and employment.


    Some risk that schools might not participate.

    We are confident that this will not happen due to the interest shown by the local schools in our pilot projects.


    Donors to this project will receive a quarterly email report on the project detailing the ongoing and forthcoming activities and any necessary changes that have been made to the project plans.

  • Background


    Based in the heart of Nelson Town Centre, Pendle District.

    Close to the M65 motorway, train station and bus station.


    Local schoolchildren will have the opportunity to participate, develop their own artistic talents and gain practical experience in media and managing a radio station.

    We are the only Community Radio Station in the whole of East Lancashire and one that offers full support to encourage participants to take part.
