Creating Positive Futures at the Weekend

This Weekend Programme will deliver AQA accredited vocational key skills and the Skills for Life Programme to enhance the employability of a minimum of 200 homeless young people. This structured learrning programme will take place in New Horizon's supportive daycentre setting.

  • Need


    This project will work with vulnerable young people, between the ages of 16 -21, who are homeless, sleeping rough or temporarily housed. All exhibit complex multiple needs resulting from substance misuse, poor physical and mental health, unsatisfactory housing, criminality, anger problems, self harm, low self esteem and social exclusion. This project will work specifically on steering this disadvantaged group away from worklessness into work readiness.


    We will solve these many faceted problems by addressing the individual learning needs of each participant. All have missed out on formal or social education, being excluded from mainstream society and facing barriers into employment. We will help them to gain formal recognition for their achievements, allowing them to take the first steps towards further education, training and employment. We will work with individuals at their own pace in a supportive, non judgemental fashion.

    What success will look like

    Success will be improving the emotional, physical and mental health needs of 300 young people p.a. in our supportive daycentre setting.

    » Self esteem raising through art workshops, music thearapy, anger management sessions and Men's Group
    » 'Guru' sessions will be facilitated by our corporate partners, sharing their knowledge of work life with our young people

    Success will be 300 marginalised young people experiencing improved self esteem, confidence and social skills.

    What success will look like

    Success will be 300 vulnerable young people p.a. making quantifiable, positive, sustainable choices and changes to their lifestyles.

  • Impact


    This project will transform the lives of 200 previously marginalised and vulnerable young people every year by equipping them with the skills to enter the workplace, education or training. Long term success will be a 50% retention rate of any work or training based opportunity the project has facilitated a young person on to over the course of 2 years. We will also expect a client satisfaction rate of at least 90% of the entire project.


    There is a risk that we will not receive on going funding for the weekend project after the first 12 months. However, we have dealt with this by following a robust fundraising stategy which includes an ambitious plan to widen our corporate funding base. To date, we have received funds from a number of new corporate partners (e.g. Deutsche Bank and Olympus) and are confident we can do more to offsett possible future statutory cuts.


    We will use our internal database (into which all our staff input actions on a daily basis), case studies, client feedback forms, questionnaires and user surveys to provide monthly reports to our donors on the successes of this project, detailing any necessary amendments to future project plans.

  • Background


    This project is based in New Horizon Youth Centre, a daycentre founded in 1967 supporting vulnerable homeless young people. We are ideally placed between the mainline stations of King's Cross and Euston and the project will benefit from the organisational background of over 43 years' experience of working with young people who have reached a rock bottom in their lives.


    This project will work with 200 young people a year. Typically, they are suffering from emotional and mental and/or physical health problems and are at risk of offending. All are homeless and many are still sleeping rough on the streets. While their needs vary, they share common histories of abuse, deprivation, rejection, discrimination and are living in poverty. New Horizon takes a holistic approach in responding to the needs, interests and aspirations of each young person.

    New Horizon Youth Centre where the project is based has been supporting vulnerable young homeless people since 1967. It intervenes at a point of change for 2,500 16 – 21 year olds each year. It makes that change positive and prevents the situation from worsening. Providing the opportunity at that crisis point for people to make positive choices and positive changes.
