Another Step Further

  • Need

Side by Side's students are challenged with a reduced capacity for managing behaviour, developing social skills and communicating with others which in addition to a lack of access to sufficient physical activity results in difficulty in forming relationships and increases the propensity for isolation and poor mental health.

The provision of Music & Arts/Drama therapy along with the planned outdoor activities will enhance the potential of SBS's students and enable opportunities for their personal, physical, social & emotional development which will in turn reduce isolation, improve their physical & mental health and allow them to develop the skills necessary to lead independent and empowered lives into adulthood.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

80 children & young people aged 2-16 with SEN will have access to 2 hours per week of Music therapy.

» Employ a dedicated Music therapist.

    What success will look like

Success will be measured in terms of improved levels of social functioning, behaviour & communication skills leading to... (continued next paragraph!)

    Aim 2

80 children & young people aged 2-16 with SEN will have access to 2 hours p/w of Arts/Drama therapy.

    » Employ a dedicated Arts/Drama therapist.

    What success will look like

(continued from Aim 1) ... improved social networks, reduced isolation, positive relationships with others & increased confidence.

    Aim 3

80 Children & Young People will have increased access to outdoor activities.

» Employ the services of horticultural therapist who will provide the children & young people the opportunities to connect through nature at their pace.

    What success will look like

The success of 'Aim 3' is similar to 1 & 2 above but with greater emphasis on the improvement to the development of participants fine & gross motor skills & improved fitness.

  • Impact

Another Step Further ('17-'18) will build on the success of 'One Step Further' ('15 - '16) at Side by Side. The provision of these additional services has been proven to have the ability to generate profound change among children & young people with SEN. In the long term, our users will have gained an ability to effect change within their own lives, discovered various & vital new outlets of self expression and engaged in physical activities in a non-institutional manner

Apart from the obvious risk of a lack of funding (which you dear Donor will hopefully mitigate) there are no real risks. We will only employ therapists who have a solid track work of professional service and who have a network of colleagues to call on in case of absence.

Donors will initially receive Thank You letters for their support of this project. They'll then be given the opportunity to opt in to our monthly newsletter which can be made available by post or email and which will detail the development of Another Step Further in addition to our other activities.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Side by Side opened it's doors in 1996 with only 3 children in a private home. We have since evolved into a fully fledged institution which provides a holistic approach to the care and education of children with Special Educational Needs. Parents, Therapists, Teachers and Carers work hand-in-hand to bring out the best in each individual child. Another Step Further will greatly improve their ability to do just that.
