  • Need

Family life changes forever when a child is diagnosed with a life-limiting or life-threatening illness. Parents, who often give up work to care for their sick child, face challenges that can put immense strain on their relationship, whilst brothers and sisters can feel confused and isolated.
In short, caring for a life-limited child can be an exhausting and lonely experience for families who face the most unimaginable challenges every day.

Little Harbour provides high quality specialist respite for children and their families in a home-from-home environment; friendship and emotional support to all members of the family at the hospice, at home, and at any hour of the day on the telephone, and dedicated sibling support to meet the needs of well brothers and sisters. We pride ourselves on being able to respond to unplanned emergency care requests and provide expert palliative and end of life care.

  • Background

Little Harbour provides vital care and support to families living in Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly and the City of Plymouth. Little Harbour is situated in Porthpean, St Austell.

The children and young people we support have a wide range of illnesses and severe learning and/or physical disabilities caused by conditions such as spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and brain tumours to name but a few. The children's conditions are wide ranging and varied and their complex needs necessitate round the clock care. Some children have a limited ability to communicate and many are so frail that their hold on life is extremely vulnerable.
