Choices & Chances
Manchester Settlement provides a door of opportunity and support to young people when they have no-one else to turn to.
We equip young people aged 14-16 not engaging in mainstream education with the skills and the knowledge to reach their full potential and turn their lives around.

Many young people we work with come from homes in crisis and lead chaotic lifestyles. They receive little or no support from home and have no-one to turn to.
They lack self esteem and see themselves as having no future prospects. They are unable to focus on education because of the multiple problems they face.
Many develop behavioural problems because they feel as though no one is listening and no one cares. Many turn to offending because they see no other way forward
We deliver complementary education that focuses on the personal development of the young person. Young people receive intensive support from youth workers and other agencies to help them cope.
We equip young people with the skills and knowledge to turn their lives around and to make informed choices about their future.
We run sessions that build self esteem, improve social skills and anger management alongside the delivery of GCSEs and ASDAN qualifications
To improve the life chances of young people who face multiple disadvantage.

What success will look like
Success will be...seeing an improvement in social skills, participation in sessions, obtaining evidence of progression from partner agencies
The long term changes our project will bring is a reduction in young people facing multiple disadvantages becoming NEET (not engaged in education, training or employment).
A reduction in the likelihood that they are going to participate in offending activities.
An improvement in the well-being of young people
We will demonstrate the success of this project through feedback from the young people themselves, other agencies, their families and witnessing the changes ourselves
There is a risk that the public spending cuts will have an adverse effect on the project
Reports will depend on the requirements of the donors and how often they want an update.Donors will receive as a minimum a newsletter and our annual report and accounts

The project is based in East Manchester’s Bradford Ward, one of the most deprived areas of the country, with IMD 2004 Super Output areas in the 1% most deprived in England. Nearly one in ten families are experiencing severe multiple disadvantage and be considered ‘at risk’.
•The working age population has few/low qualifications with 61.4% have no qualifications, or only Level 1 (2001 Census Bradford Ward).
•A further characteristic of the Bradford ward is the low level of economic activity
Young people who face multiple disadvantage will benefit from the project. Since 2002 we have run complementary education and firmly believe that everyone given guidance, support and opportunity can make a better lives for themselves
Our charity is best placed to carry out this project because of our long history. Since 1895 we have worked with people living in East Manchester, one of the most deprived areas in England.
We have been delivering complementary education since 2002 and believe that through an ethos of care and encouragement we can have a positive impact on a young persons life
