To create an open source platform of all the accessibility data relevant to a visitor with access needs. This can enable a range of applications, guides, and projects to meet different access needs. It will enable with a simple search people to find the facilities to enable equal rights to leisure

    Need

    At present data about access is held by different organisations in many forms, not all searchable or reliable, and often on inaccessible websites or formats. To make a simple trip, disabled people may have to undertake hours of research, or not be able to access information that is there. Disabled people are badly underserved in the holidays and leisure areas.

    Solution

    By bringing data together, we can create a comprehensive and reliable information service. We can make it fully accessible, and in a variety of formats. By offering it on opensource, the creativity of individuals and non-profit groups can be brought to bear to bring life and new ideas and choices to people currently excluded.

    Activities

    » Use our extensive network of contacts to extend our current list of partners in this endeavour.
    » Hold a high level conference in March to launch the concept and prototype to businesses and policymakers to secure their participation

    Success will be reasonable national coverage of all the various elements of accomodation, dining, attractions, travel, toilets, parking, petrol stations, high streets.


    Aim 2

    To publicise the information system to potential visitors with access needs here and abroad

    » A wide-ranging publicity campaign, and a disability awareness day that will contribute to this, using disabled groups and corporate supporters

    Success will be awareness and use of the information provision by at least 100,000 users in the first year, and good media coverage

    To develop the platform so that it has a multiplicity of uses, and is sustainable

    » Extend the partnership and promote the platform to developers. Demonstrate its usefulness during London 2012, and establish it as a legacy

    Success will be a range of applications for mobile phones, sat navs, printed guides, route planning and specific niche markets


  • Impact

    Impact

    We want to raise the percentage of disabled people who would travel to include the 50% who are currently put off by lack of trust and facilities. We want providers to expect a regular flow of disabled customers that they are happy to serve and benefit from their custom. We will measure both these factors using industry statistics, and use of the platform and its various application.

    Risk

    There is a danger we will not get national coverage of data, so that searches do not reveal any specific facility required in the vicinity. There is also a danger that the information provision will not be up to standard. We are covering this by securing in advance partners who can supply a reasonable level of sound data to start with. We will use auditing, mystery shopping, and crowdsourcing to cover any gaps or inadequacies.

    Reporting

    We produce a Tourism for All newsletter, and ebulletins on a regular basis, as well as publishing full information about the charity on our www.tourismforall.org.uk website. Donors who require more detailed reports will be catered for on request.

  • Background

    Location

    We are working with Osmosoft, a branch of BT, on platform creation, based in Central London. The charity has an information base in Cumbria, and main personnel work as a 'virtual office' from various locations around the UK

    Beneficiaries

    Nearly 12 million people have an illness or disability that gives rise to some form of access need - across all ages, classes and regions. However, there is higher prevalence of disability as we age. These are the people who will mainly benefit, but also people with babies and buggies, heavy suitcases, anxiety about travel, non-English speakers and more

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

    Tourism for All has long been the main source of information on accessible tourism as a neutral non-profit organisation. We are a small organisation that tends to 'punch above our weight' and act as an umbrella for a range of stakeholders, from government departments to small businesses. No-one else has such access. This project would be the fulfilment of a long held dream, the one stop shop disabled people have been asking us for.
