Project information

School feeding in Malawi

We provide a meal a day, in school, to children who might otherwise struggle to receive food and education. The meal helps to make it possible for children to learn and to escape the poverty trap in the long term.

Our commitment is to provide school meals until they are no longer needed.

  • Need

We are trying to solve the problems of hunger, poverty and lack of education.

Because they receive a meal in school, children have the energy they need to come to school and to concentrate when they get there, and they also have a short-term incentive to study - instead of working or searching for food. In the long term, education is the most effective way to help children to escape the poverty trap,

    Aim 1

    School feeding in Malawi

» Mary's Meals provides a meal of likuni phala, a maize-based, nutrition-rich porridge, for children every school day.

We are able to judge success by the numbers of children being fed and increases in school attendance and enrolment rates.

  • Impact

We monitor attendance and enrolment rates and exam results and expect to see improvements where Mary's Meals has been introduced. In the long-term, we hope that children who have received Mary's Meals will gain the education and skills that will help them to escape poverty.

In Malawi, the food that we provide for children is maize based. The food is grown locally and there is a risk that its production could be affected by drought or natural disasters. If this happens, steps will be taken to source food from neighbouring countries.

We will share monitoring information and photos of children receiving their likuni phala.
