Helpline Extension

We provide a helpline for people who are experiencing sightloss either suddenly or gradually. The helpline offers support advice and a listening ear for those in distress on losing their sight. The line is staffed by visually impaired volunteers. We need to extend the service from 5 to 7 nights.

    Need

    The calls we receive come from those who are coming to terms with loss of vision in varying degrees, they are from men and women in their 20’s to those in their 90’s. Their backgrounds are diverse. The majority needing to talk to someone who understands from personal experience, exactly how they feel. Feed back from our service users indicates that our support service is much needed.

    Solution

    The service can be a lifesaver for up to 2000 users per year, in that it can give them hope when they are feeling despair. The long term effects of the service are that service users are signposted in the direction of agencies that will help improve their circumstances emotionally, financially and through rehabilitation back into the workplace and their lives can be changed dramatically.

  • Impact

    Impact

    The helpline will help to combat isolation and loneliness in visually impaired people and improve their access to the support networks available to them. Help them out of poverty by signposting them to the appropriate welfare agencie and benefits they are entitled to. The success will be that we will recruit and train 20 visually impaired volunteers and that numbers ring the helpline will increase by 30%.

    Risk

    There is a risk that we are unable to recruit the volunteers we need to extend the project. We have dealt with this risk by continually targeting visually impaired volunteers by advertising on our website and through our publicity and promotional campaigns

    Reporting

    Funders of this project will receive a monthly email report on the project detailing the ongoing and forthcoming activities, and any necessary changes that have been made to the project plans.

    We are based in Waterloo Liverpool but our helpline can be accessed by people all over the UK.

    Why Us?

    We have been established for 10 years and we are well respected charity . Our Coordinator is an inspirational woman who having suffered herself from sudden loss of sight set up the helpline to help others. We currently receive funding from The Rnib The Health Service and the Morgan Foundation

    Eileen is the Founder and Coordinator. She is inspirational because she set up the charity from grassroots level to the thriving service it is today

    Michaela is the facilitaor of the Helpline she is visually impaired and she inspires the volunteers through her practical and supportive approach.
