  • Need

The demands for hospice care in Rotherham require increased capacity for all the services provided by Rotherham Hospice. Increasing the inpatient bed capacity from 8 to 14 will significantly meet the needs of those adults in Rotherham with life-limiting illnesses that require this part of our service.

This project sees the completion of a state-of-the-art building that provides 10 new inpatient rooms with en-suite facilities. The building uses all modern heating and thermal technologies to ensure constant temperatures and low running cost. These 10 new rooms with our existing 4 give the Hospice the 14 inpatient bed capacity required to continue to become a centre of excellence for hospice care in Rotherham.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Increase inpatient capacity from 8 to 14 beds.

» Build the new extension of 10 beds and convert an existing 4-bed ward area into new patient and family facilities. Refurbish the remaining 4 rooms.

    What success will look like

Success will be the ability to use all 14 inpatient rooms and reduce waiting times for admissions of patients.

    Aim 2

Enable Rotherham Hospice to become a centre of excellence for specialist palliative care.

» Increased inpatient capacity allows more patient needs to be met and a high quality of care to be provided to those requiring our services.

    What success will look like

Success will be measured through surveys and audits to demonstrate the delivery of high quality care for all whose use our services. And through the education of others.

    Aim 3

To control expenditure and reduce running costs.

» The state-of-the-art new extension uses ground source heating, solar panels, and modern thermal technologies to ensure low running cost.

    What success will look like

Success will be strong financial controls and the ability to develop more services over coming years.

  • Impact

The project will bring about significant improvements to all of those adults requiring the specialist services Rotherham Hospice provides and enabling patient choice for their preferred place of care. Greater inpatient capacity will reduce admission waiting times and meet patient needs quicker. This will be demonstrated through our activity figures and through the responses of patients, families, carers and other stakeholders to regularly surveys we undertake.

Delays in the delivery of the extension will delay the improved services. Regular site meetings will ensure all work remains on schedule. Financial demands of the project are being monitored and increased funding applied for to ensure completion of the project.

Regular newsletters and updates are sent to donors. Updates on our website are also posted to ensure all donors are aware of progress. Press releases are also sent as appropriate.

  • Background

Rotherham Hospice is situated in the Broom area of Rotherham and has been established on this site for 16 years. Rotherham Hospice has always been generously supported by the local population and this support is vitally needed for the Hospice to continue to deliver all its services. Rotherham has been through many challenges over the last two decades with mining and industry closures and has a challenging job market.

The adults of Rotherham who have life-limiting illnesses and require specialist end of life care services will benefit from the project to increase inpatient bed capacity. This will also have a benefit to the wider network of families, carers and other stakeholders. This will also allow a greater choice for patients on their preferred place of care.
