Hollywood Homeless is a music and photography project initiated by USL, designed specifically to work with the homeless community of Liverpool.The aim of the project is to engage with 30 people, increasing their self esteem, confidence, motivation and develop transferable skills.

Homeless communities are dis-engaged and view themselves as excluded from society. The specific needs of homeless people have been identified as: distraction, and relief from drugs and alcohol problems, increasing confidence and self esteem, challenging negative stereotypes, developing transferable skills, finding methods of re-engaging with society on a wider scale (e.g: looking for work, enrolling in education classes and courses, volunteering).
Hollywood Homeless will provide training in the use of cameras(editing, technology, display and exhibition) and an introduction to music skills (performance, ensemble and improvisational). Both elements of the project will assist participants in developing confidence, self esteem, team work and co-operation, ICT skills, event planning and management skills. Interaction with such activities allows participants to make a positive change to their own lives and the society to which they live in.
To create the Hollywood Homeless exhibition and performance, to take place February 2012.
Activities» Run 20 photography workshops and 10 editing program workshops. The result of these workshops will be displayed in a 30 day exhibition for public view.
» Run 20 music workshops involving performance and ensemble skills. The compositions will be presented in a series of 5 performances for public viewing.
» Lead 10 days of digital manipulation in a IT suite and a 5 day web design course.
To achieve an audience of 3000 people for the exhibition and an audience of 100 per performance. We will also measure the changing attitudes of participants.
The project will provide participants with an opportunity to make positive changes to their lifestyles with the possibility of participants engaging in education, voluntary work and regaining contact with family and friends. We will demonstrate our success by monitoring and displaying the progression of the participants. The project will aim to create a continuing relationship with the participants and other organisations involved, creating a legacy and prevent a return to previous behaviours.
A reduction in public spending expenditure may result in a reduction of public services available to participants upon completion of our project. We will establish a strong partnership with existant services to deal with this risk and minimise distress to participants. A mis-understanding of the aims of the project will result in a lack of respect for the project. We have dealt with this by creating a participant contract which will ensure participants to respond in a respective manner.
Updates will be available on the USL websites and e-mail if requested. The updates will include the progress of the participants , upcoming events and any alterations which have been made to the project.

The project will be based at St Lukes Church, central Liverpool. The building is traditionally a meeting place for street drinkers and homeless people, who are perceived as a problem by police and local residents. Liverpool has a rich tradition of music and visual arts, community participation projects, and using the arts as an engine for regeneration and social change. St Lukes is also a major visitor attraction and has a special place in the hearts and minds of the people of Liverpool.
The homeless community are the primary beneficiaries. The engaging nature arts projects has proven positive effects offering alternatives to lifestyles and often results in a positive change to their outlook and future. The exhibition and performances provide an opportunity for public recognition of the homeless and challenges preconceptions and stereotypes. Providing these opportunities also benefits the wider community by reducing rates of offending (antisocial behaviour, crime, begging etc).
USL have 20 years experience working in the community and believe in the value of the arts and creative industries as a major tool in regenerating and creating cohesive communities. In May 2007 USL re-opened Liverpool’s St Luke’s Church to the public. USL have developed a continuing relationship with many members of the homeless community that congregate around the building, and know many people by name, and have developed a mutual trust and respect with them.
