'I CAN Help' Advisory Service

I CAN is setting up an advisory service to offer parents, concerned about their child’s communication, the vital information they need to help their child. The ‘I CAN Help’ advisory service will provide on the spot advice over the telephone as well as offering a call-back service from a specialist.

    Communication difficulties are complex and not easy to understand. Finding out what is wrong is extremely difficult for parents because clear advice and information, about this poorly understood issue, is very hard to come by. Parent’s waste months or years trying to find out what exactly they should do, all while watching their child fall further and further behind. During 2011, a national year dedicated to raising awareness about communication, more parents than ever will be seeking advice.

    I CAN is setting up the 'I CAN Help' advisory service to offer parents who are concerned about their child’s communication the vital information they need to help their child. The advisory service will provide on the spot advice and information over the telephone and via email (and will send free useful resources) as well as offering a call-back service from a Speech and Language Therapist for more specialist guidance. During 2011 we anticipate we will field between 300-400 calls each month.

    » Offer expert advice, information and resources to parents and professionals concerned about the communication development of children in their care.
    » Advertise the new 'I CAN Help' advisory service so that more parents, teachers and other children's practitioners know where to turn for advice.

    Success will mean that more children with communication difficulties will have their needs correctly identified and supported. With help, these children will thrive and progress.

    In the UK today there are over a million children with communication difficulties who are not getting help because their problems have been mislabelled or overlooked or because their parents don't know what to do to help them. During 2011 we will empower between 300-400 families and children's professionals each month with the vital information they need to identify if a child has a communication problem and offer/secure them the right support.

    Risk

    This is a very low risk enterprise for I CAN. The main risk would be that the service would not be sufficiently utilised. However, we know that this will not be the case as we currently field 80-100 calls each month without advertising a formal service.

    Once 'I CAN Help' is established it will be advertised so that more parents know where to turn. Furthermore, the National Year of Communication will greatly increase demand for this sort of service.

    Reporting

    Funders of this project will recieve a quarterly report on the service detailing the number of enquiries we field, the general nature of these and the outcomes for some of the families and children we help.

    Location

    The 'I CAN Help' Advisory Service will be run from I CAN's Central Office in London, however it will be advertised nationwide. The service will therefore benefit children throughout the UK, especially areas of social disadvantage where communication difficulties have a particularly highly prevalence.

    Beneficiaries

    This service will be a lifeline to parents who currently face a frustrating and distressing journey towards tyring to understand their child's needs and secure the support that would help them.

    By offering parents and children's professionals (who work with thousands of children) expert, practical advice more children with communication difficulties will have their needs correctly identified and supported. With help, these children will thrive and make progress in all areas of life.
