We own and operate two traditional tall ships, Lord Nelson and Tenacious. These ships are unique as they are the only two in the world specifically designed and built to enable people of all abilities from the age of 16 upwards to sail side by side on equal terms.

  • Need


    Since the charities inception in 1978, times have never been harder economically for the JST, a challenge we know we will win!

    The total cost of operating our tall ships is in the region of £2,900,000 a year. Approximately 50% of these costs are covered by income from voyage fees. The remaining balance of running and repair costs has to be raised through events, individual donations and grants from Charitable Trust and Foundations. Costs may include sails, medical supplies and crew fees.


    We subsidise every voyage place by 30-50% to ensure they are affordable and accessible to all.

    To keep these heavily subsidised voyages available, the Trust has to ensure that all voyages are near to capacity or full and the fundraising team exceeds already difficult targets. By increasing the amount of generous donations we receive, we can continue to operate both our ships thus enabling over 2000 people a year of all physical abilities to sail with the Jubilee Sailing Trust.

    » To keep publicising and selling our voyages through as many means as possible including brochures, media, social media, events, stands and networking
    » Increasing the amount and improving the quality of appeals we send to Charitable Trust and Foundations to receive more generous donations.
    » To begin a new scheme of Prospecting potential High Net Worth Donors. This is hugely beneficial to Charities and you only need one or two successes.

    Success will be recorded by the number of voyages we manage to sail, the occupancy rates we have on each voyage and the ability to keep changing the lives of over 2000 people p/a

  • Impact


    This project has already seen important changes take place at the Southampton head office. We have reduced head office employees from 25 to 16 in a bid to increase efficiency, reduce expenditure and remove unnecessary positions. We have already seen an increase in voyage/fundraising income. Reducing expenditure has played a major role in this project, with our Ship Operation department, and consequently the ships seeing the biggest cuts, but not to the detriment of health and safety on-board.


    The third sector is beginning to see the effects of the recent economic downturn. Although our voyages are life changing and uniquely enabling opportunities for people, our voyages can be seen as desirable holidays which are not necessary rather than voyages to help improve disability awareness and increase diversity amongst individuals. Equally donations from Charitable Trusts and individuals have become much harder to achieve, although donations have held up relatively well in 2011/12


    Donors always receive a thank you letter and often, even if not requested, receive reports to inform them of how their donation has been allocated and any important recent news / upcoming events for the JST. These are in the form of normal word reports with pictures, quotes and case studies.

  • Background


    Our two ships spiritual home is Southampton. This is their port of registry and we proudly bear the cities name on the stern of the ships. The ships spend the summer months around the UK, with one ship spending its time in the north and on the east coast, and the other ship sailing along the south coast and around Cornwall into the Irish Sea. During the winter both ships head to warmer climates, namely the Caribbean and Canary Islands. We welcome people of all nationalities on-board


    Anyone over the age of 16 can sail with us and we can take people from all over the UK and further afield. We aim to take an equal mix of able bodied and physically disabled crew on each trip with a maximum of 40 people on each voyage. We strive to achieve integration on levels such as age, background, religion, culture and gender.

    Crewing a tall ship is a challenge for anyone, at the JST we prove that with teamwork and understanding this challenge can be met.

    The results of the work we do speak for themselves. Since 1978 we have taken over 36,000 people to sea, 16,500 with a physically disability of which 5,000 people were wheelchair users.
    97% of the voyage crew rated the JST experience as good/excellent
    87% of voyage crew said the voyage made them more aware of what can be achieved by a mixed ability team in a well designed environment
    84% said they had a greater understanding of how obstacles faced by people with disabilities can be removed.

    Ships Crew

    Our magnificent ships crew which are paid Merchant Seamen. They include Captain, 1st Mate, Cook, Medical Purser, Engineer, 2nd Engineer and Bosun.

    Head Office Staff

    Based in Southampton; Head Office has 15 employees. Departments include Ship Operations, Finance, Fundraising and Sales and Business Operations.

    Volunteers - National Branches

    The JST has a loyal and dedicated volunteer Branch network throughout the UK, with over 500 volunteers. These people are critical to a successful JST
