Contact Counselling Service

Counselling Support as a First Resort not a Last Resort.

We want to be able to develop a strong and reliable counselling service with minimal waiting times, in order to allow children and young people in our town and its surrounding rural area to access vital support when they need it.

  • Need

    Need

Many of the young people in Tiverton are leading severely disaffected lives. Sadly these young people are trying to cope with symptoms such as: anxiety, stress, self-harm and depression, caused by loss & separation, abuse; (sexual, physical and/or neglect). Many are in long-term foster care, or care for parents who are chronically ill, disabled, or who misuse alcohol or other substances.

    Solution

We wish to continue to build our counselling service in Tiverton, and provide emotional support for more of the children and young people who are trying to survive extremely difficult and chaotic lives. A particular strength of the service is that it has become well-known and the young people have come to rely on it, often referring friends and siblings.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide more counselling hours within school time - this is where most young people are most of the

    Activities

» Increase existing counsellor hours and/or take on an additional counsellor

Success will be evidenced by the number of people using the service and maintaining statistics & measuring outcomes,

    Aim 2

To reach young people who are not currently in secondary education.

    Activities

» Build counselling provision outside school for those who are currently escluded, school phobic, or have left school but still under 25 years of age.

Success will be evidenced by young people able to return to education and/or subsequent employment and training.

    Aim 3

To supply support by way of group-work

    Activities

» We all function mostly as part of various groups and it is in this area that many young people struggle to cope.

Success will be measured by measuring outcomes of people's experiences in groups and follow-up questionnaires.

  • Impact

    Impact

Apart from the measures above we anticipate that young people will be empowered to make more positive, healthier lifestyle choices and lead more fulfilling lives than would otherwise have been the case.

    Risk

Lack of continued, reliable funding is the biggest difficulty. We have been forced to restrict availability of support and sadly this means that young people often have to manage without. Many do not manage very well at all.

    Reporting

We will provide statistics and usage data. Qualitative data can be provided as long as we are able to protect the confidentiality of our clients.

  • Background

    Location

As most of the young people in Tiverton are at school most of the time, this is where we locate most of our counselling support. We would also like to reach those who are not in school and those who have left full-time education.

    Beneficiaries

We are currently only able to reach the most needy of the young people in our catchment area. We would like to expand the service to provide support at an earlier stage and prevent escalation of behaviour and negative lifestyle choices.
