Equal Rights to Quality Education in Tanzania

In collaboration with 3 partners, we work across 70 primary and secondary schools to improve access to education, strengthen quality of teaching and school management, promote health clubs to boost acquisition of life skills, all of which improves students’ motivation and academic achievement.

  • Need

    Need

    The number of students in Tanzania’s primary schools has doubled to around 8 million pupils, creating an infrastructure crisis. Teachers face complex and challenging working environments with limited resources and a lack of support. It is estimated that 5.1 million children aged 7 to 17 years are out of school, including nearly 1.5 million of lower secondary school age. Tanzania has the world’s lowest rate of transition from primary to secondary school, particularly in rural areas.

    Solution

    This project increases teachers’ and school management’s capacity to deliver quality education and to change communities’ detrimental attitudes to the value of girls’ education. This has resulted in better academic results, improved morale and enthusiasm for 4,300 project school teachers, as well as increased awareness of the benefits education can bring; 5,314 community members have been sensitised on the importance of education through meetings held by our 3 partners.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    To improve the quality of teaching in primary and secondary schools.


    Activities

    » Partners will provide training & mentoring on Maths, Science, English & life skills. There will be head teachers’ and school committees’ training.

    What success will look like

    Support government school inspectorates & visits. Assist in the delivery of quality monitoring & evaluation processes to see an equal number of boys & girls succeeding in school.


    Aim 2

    To increase awareness of rights, self-confidence and understanding of life skills amongst students.


    Activities

    » Health clubs will be supported for girls and boys to learn about wider health issues including STIs, early forced marriage, and unplanned pregnancy.

    What success will look like

    Train and empower primary school club members & secondary club members. So far, more than 5,600 girls & 4,500 boys have benefited from health clubs over the last 4 years.


    Aim 3

    Increase schools’ capacity to prevent and respond to abuses to children.


    Activities

    » Child protection policies & systems to report and handle incidents of abuse, exploitation &/or neglect. Work with officials to enforce regulations.

    What success will look like

    Establish systems whereby incidents of abuse & neglect are identified & addressed. Work with district officials & the police to enforce government regulations on child marriage.


  • Impact

    Impact

    The project will transform the education of girls and boys in some of the most marginalised & disadvantaged communities. It will secure equal numbers of girls & boys succeeding at school & increased transition between primary & secondary school. The project will make the schools safer and happier through implementing child protection policies & practices, providing training on child rights, ethical relationships, gender-based violence & HIV. Education opens minds and provides job opportunities.

    Risk

    Busy schedules of teachers & schools may impact on attendance to training opportunities & support. This is addressed by involving District Education Officers & head teachers in each stage of the project who are committed to follow up meetings with teachers on a quarterly basis.

    Teacher & staff turnover experienced in year 3; dealt by frequent school visits of Quality Assurance Officers, District Education Officers (DEOs) & Ward Education Officers (WEOs) which has improved teachers’ attendance.

    Reporting

    Throughout the life cycle of the project, staff regularly monitor & evaluate the project to assess challenges & progress made against project targets. Donors will receive reports every six months. We will also publish our annual review & regularly update our website and social media.

  • Background

    Location

    The project brings lasting change to 44 primary schools and 26 secondary schools across 6 districts in northern Tanzania: Longido; Ngorongoro; Monduli; Karatu; Mbulu; and Kilolo. Many of the project schools are in very remote and rural areas.

    Beneficiaries

    The project will transform the education of up to 49,000 girls and boys of primary and secondary school age in some of the most marginalised and disadvantaged communities. It is expected that more than 4,500 primary and secondary school teachers, and over 1,000 public officials will benefit from training and mentoring. Working with families and communities in pastoralist, agro-pastoralist or subsistence areas, the project works to help change detrimental attitudes to girls' education.

Through education and community engagement, we help individuals and communities become more empowered to exercise their rights.     Pastoral Women's Council (PWC)

    A women-led organisation working to alleviate poverty and marginalisation of Maasai women and girls. Works to change attitudes to girls' education.

    Community Aid And Small Enterprise Consultancy (CASEC)

    A human and social development NGO which focusses on girls' education and urban youth work. CASEC provides training, research and consultancy.

    Community Research And Development Service (CORDS)

    CORDS assesses and addresses the needs of local communities, specialising in land rights, women's rights and access to education.
