Giving vulnerable children a happier Christmas

This Christmas we will help hundreds of children struggling with the chaos and trauma of parental substance abuse, imprisonment or poverty.

They can feel isolated, unhappy and vulnerable.

The help Circle provides gives those children the best chance of a happy life not just a happy Christmas.

  • Need

    Need

Circle supports children, and their families, suffering multiple disadvantages and complex traumas. These traumas can include parental substance abuse, imprisonment and poverty.

At Christmas time social pressure adds stress to families who find it difficult to heat their homes, feed their families and make Christmas a happy time.

With your support we can take some of the pressure off by helping families with food hampers with a festive twist and in some cases even help with children's gifts.

    Solution

Circle helps families avoid the stress of Christmas and enables them to create happy memories instead.

Supporting families with food, festive treats and appropriate gifts Circle can help them develop stronger relationships, build trust and create a safe, and fun, environment for children.

Circle works all year round with children, and parents, to help them understand their issues, find their own solutions and make positive choices. Giving them a chance to lead a happier, more productive life.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To support families with children living in poverty with some of the basic costs of Christmas.

    Activities

» We will distribute food or supermarket vouchers to vulnerable families most in need.
» We will distribute children's toys and gifts to vulnerable families most in need.

    What success will look like

Success will be families spending quality time together eating, playing and making memories. This will help them continue their progress towards a happier life together.

    Aim 2

Provide an outreach service to families who are struggling with imprisonment or substance abuse.

    Activities

» We provide 1:1 therapeutic support for children and young people struggling with the chaos and trauma of parental substance abuse and imprisonment.
» We support parents to make the right decisions, sign-post them to appropriate services, improve family relationships and address health needs.

    What success will look like

  • Impact

    Impact

Long term we want all of the children and families we work with to build upon existing strengths to make, and sustain, positive lifestyle choices

Children will be better able to express their emotions, build their confidence and develop resilience to help them cope with any challenges.

Parents will be able to improve family relationships, establish boundaries and routines within the home, manage children’s behaviours, address health needs, improve school attendance and access local services.

    Risk

Circle have been working with families affected by parental substance abuse, imprisonment and poverty since the 1970's.

Our service is voluntarily entered into and this can ensure that only families that are ready and open to undertaking the work required are involved.

Our staff are all highly trained in a variety of social care qualifications and are skilled at building trusting relationships with all the members of a vulnerable family.

    Reporting

By talking to the families our donors support over Christmas we will be able to record and share their positive experiences.

The impact this kind of support has should not be underestimated and certainly rarely goes unappreciated.

  • Background

    Location

Circle works across Central Scotland including, but not limited to, Edinburgh, East Lothian, West Lothian, South Lanarkshire and North Lanarkshire.

We work in some of the most deprived local areas providing support where there is a distinct inequality of services and austerity has had a particularly negative effect.

Challenges include high unemployment, lower life expectancy, drug use, poor school attendance/attainment and crime.

    Beneficiaries

Children suffering from the chaos and trauma of parental substance abuse, imprisonment and poverty.

We offer a range of services to meet the individual needs of families. We work alongside families to help them build upon existing strengths to make and sustain positive lifestyle choices.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Circle's 'Whole Family Approach' is a unique service because it endeavours to ensure that all children are safe, happy, healthy and nurtured within a stable family environment, which supports them to achieve their potential.

We have built positive partnerships with local statutory services, GPs, health care hubs and other third sector providers to ensure that we engage with those children and family often referred to as 'hard to reach'.
