Food security in Northern Kenya

The establishment of a food security initiative will bring together multiple strands of Lewa's conservation efforts by addressing the needs of the surrounding communities as they relate to scare resources of water and land. In addressing this, we will promote local conservation and reduce poaching.

  • Need

    Need

    Climate change, traditional agricultural practices and over-grazing of lands has led to poor crop yields leading to increased human / wildlife conflict for scare resources. By establishing a food security initiative, Lewa seeks to reduce this.

    Solution

    Lewa’s food security initiative is comprised of three sectors: reliable water access, sustainable agriculture training, and women’s micro-loans and business training. By improving food security in the region, Lewa improves stability and influences changes in a behavior that support a more sustainable approach to livelihoods and a reliance on wildlife and the greater ecosystem as a valuable asset to be protected in the long-term.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    To ensure reliable and sustainable water access, ensuring water is used in a considerate manner.


    Activities

    » The focus will be on maintaining the existing water projects, ensuring sustainable usage through education and monitoring.

    What success will look like

    We will monitor number of households accessing efficient water systems and number of households utilising the water for food production.


    Aim 2

    To expand our agricultural training programme to 3000 more subsistence farmers.


    Activities

    » We will focus on expanding the reach of the programme by providing more learning opportunities and engaging more trainers.

    What success will look like

    We will monitor the number of farmers trained and monitor the number of farmers using new farming methods.



    Aim 3

    To expand the women's micro-loan programme focusing on agribusiness.


    Activities

    » We will expand the micro-credit revolving loan fund to benefit 2,000 more women and provide specific agri-business training to help develop markets.

    What success will look like

    We will monitor the number of new agribusiness loans accessed along with monitoring the agribusiness repayment rates achieved.


    Aim 4

    To raise funds for maintenance of vehicle to facilitate monitoring of food security initiative.


    Activities

    » Vehicle will enable us to inform on greater ecosystem stability, weather patters and water catchment areas.

    What success will look like

    We will track the enhanced distances we can cover for monitoring and record the number of new farms and agribusinesses which we can visit.


  • Impact

    Impact

    By improving food security in the region, Lewa will continue to improve regional stability and will influences changes in a behaviour that support a more sustainable approach to livelihoods and a reliance on wildlife and the greater ecosystem as a valuable asset to be protected in the long-term.
    This behavioural change will have a positive impact on wildlife and habitat conservation, including a reduction in poaching as an economic incentive or for bush meat.

    Risk

    The risks are minimal as the components of this initiative already exist as part of our community developments programme. What we are doing here is uniting these strands in to a comprehensive effort to link sustainable water practices with sustainable agricultural ones in the mind and practices of the local farmers.
    We will increase micro-credit loans for projects which fit in to this initiative as these will increase available local food and will be run by best sustainable practices.

    Reporting

    We will report back to donors both directly through email updates from me and also through our regular communication vehicles: regular newsletters, annual Impact Report, social media coverage.

  • Background

    Location

    Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (LWC) is located in northern Kenya and is one of the last strongholds of the most spectacular flora and fauna on the planet.
    We run an active conservancy underpinned by community development, creating structures that allow local communities to pursue traditional livelihoods in a modern context.

    Beneficiaries

    More than 50,000 people who live in the communities surrounding LWC currently benefit from our community development programmes.
    This project will continue to benefit this group while expanding it to include 3,000 additional farmers and 2,000 more women who will be producing food for local consumption and also for sale bringing in money to their families and communities.

    Why Us?

    Lewa has an established track record in the region and is well respected by local communities and leaders.
    There is already the demand to expand our sustainable agriculture programme along with demand for more funds for micro-loans.
    The infrastructure is in place, we know the needs and have identified the recipients of this project, we now require the funding to see it through.

    People

    John Kinoti

    John Kinoti is our Community Development Manager and is responsible for introducing and overseeing the water, agricultural and micro-loan programmes.

    Dr. Tuqa Jirmo

    Dr Jirmo is the Chief Operations Officer overseeing all efforts on LWC and supporting the CEO, Mike Watson.

    Ruwaydah Abdul Rahman

    Ruwaydah is the Donor Relations Manager and is responsible for ensuring that donors are kept informed of progress of projects.
