Project information

Sedbergh School Roger Lupton Scholarships

Sedbergh School provides an outstanding education that provides a unique opportunity for youngsters to discover and develop their talents. This project will make this opportunity available to youngsters from deprived backgrounds who would not otherwise be able to consider a Sedbergh education.

  • Need

Many youngsters today are unable to realise their full potential through lack of opportunity to both discover and develop their talents. The education provided at Sedbergh School is acknowledged to deliver on both fronts but, for financial reasons, is not available to many likely to benefit from it - including those living in the relatively deprived areas of cities in the north and midlands. We are working with charities to provide these life changing opportunities.

Over the last 6 years since the project was started we have been able to fund 100% scholarships for 11 young people at the school. The ambition is to create two more places each September for new Roger Lupton Scholars. Additional pastoral support will be provided to the individual and family as required throughout the scholarship period. After leaving School the pupils will benefit from the support of the extended Sedbergh School community for social and career networking.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To provide an education at Sedbergh for two young people from disadvantaged backgrounds each year.

» Work with partners to identify young people from relatively deprived areas/backgrounds who might benefit from a Sedbergh education.
» Support the young people and their families before arriving, once enrolled, on arrival, through the term, during the vacations and after they leave.
» Generate funding to cover 100% of the cost of the scholarships and any additional costs such as uniform, trips, books, travel, etc.

    What success will look like

Success will be demonstrated through the successful identification of 2 appropriate recipients of the scholarship by September 2019.

    Aim 2

To generate financial support for the cost of 2 full scholarships

» Promote this message through literature, distributed to around 6,000 supporters of the School, including parents, former parents, Friends and alumni
» Promote this message on the School website and at key School events, through mailings, email, newsletters and text.
» Approach other possible sources of funding eg charitable trusts.
» Organise one to one meetings with key donors as well as fundraising events/activities

    What success will look like

Success will be demonstrated by generating financial support for 2 scholarships for 2 years by the end of 2018-19 (£ 120,000)

    Aim 3

To increase awareness of the benefit of scholarships and bursaries to the whole School community

» Identify past and current recipients and use them as advocates and ambassadors for the project
» Request regular updates on experience and achievement of current recipients and establish the Roger Lupton Scholars alumni group.
» Request testimonials from recipients for publication on the School website, in literature and at key events

    What success will look like

Success will be making reference at Speech day (1/year), legacy lunches (3/year), key events (4/year) by July 2019.

    Aim 4

To increase awareness of the benefit of scholarships and bursaries to potential partners/recipients

    » Identify potential partner organisations
» Through the partner organisations, identify potential recipients
» Organise one to one meetings with partner organisations
» Organise one to one meetings involving School, partner organisation and potential recipient

    What success will look like

Success will be demonstrated by developing the relationship with potential third sector partners.

    Aim 5

To create an endowment fund to maintain the scholarships in perpetuity

» Include the recently established endowment fund in all fundraising communication relative to the Roger Lupton Scholarships
» Promote the appeal at key events
» Encourage supporters to consider leaving a gift in their will to the endowment
» Promote the concept of share giving to the endowment as a tax efficient way of supporting the scheme

    What success will look like

Success will be demonstrated by establishing the endowment fund by the end of the 5 year strategy period.

  • Impact

The project will create a life changing opportunity with lifelong effects. Initially success will be demonstrated through the range of activities pursued by the recipients, their levels of achievement and research feedback. Longer term success will be illustrated through the individual’s achievements once at University and/or in a career. The benefits are truly long term and enduring and impact on the individual, the School and wider community.

The principal risk is that of not raising sufficient funds to pay for all the scholarships. To mitigate this, the School will guarantee the conclusion of the education of any individual accepted on to the scheme. Other risks include not being able to identify appropriate recipients and not providing the correct support for them and their families before, during and after their Sedbergh education. Our experience over the last 5 years will minimise this risk.

Donors will receive a regular report on the progress of the recipients in the Sedbergh School Foundation Annual report and through speeches at key Foundation events. They will also have the opportunity to meet some of the pupils at events if appropriate for them to be identified.

Benefits will also be experienced within the recipient’s home community.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

The School offers a unique educational experience at one of the few remaining full boarding schools in the UK. The House system and size create a true family atmosphere and ensure that every pupil is cared for as an individual and given any pastoral support required. Sport, music and drama are of the highest quality and the location of the School provides access to many opportunities for outdoor pursuits. Academic achievements rank alongside those of most selective independent schools.
