Kerala Crafts

Kerala Crafts was set up in 2001 to help provide an alternative to a life of poverty by providing sustainable employment to marginalised women in Kerala, southern India. We support 3 women's co-operatives & also an orphanage for girls. Support is both practical and financial.
We are committed to Fairtrade, and help to provide opportunities for artisans who are economically disadvantaged in the conventional trading system. There is no distinction made of caste, age or religion in the workplace

Founded 2001

  • Mission statement

Kerala Crafts was established to address the needs of marginalised women & girls in south India.
We help to provide employment to women who would otherwise have no work, few prospects & thus little hope. One group of women work at the Vimala Welfare Centre - they make banana fibre handicrafts. Wages & working conditions are well above the norm for India. The women are able to improve living standards, & importantly, afford to send their children to school. The centre's outreach within Cochin, continues, & includes day care for the elderly, subsidised accommodation for poor female students, provision of commercial & secretarial courses & a range of community development programmes. Hundreds of individuals are helped through all these projects, & the benefits flow out into the communities in which they live.
Kerala Crafts also supports Valsalya Bhavan, an orphanage for girls up to the age of 15. Currently it is home to 100 girls who have been rescued from dangerous situations such as begging, child labour & sexual abuse. We find sponsors for the girls, which provides food, school costs, travel, medicines, sanitary towels etc.
Older girls have accommodation within the welfare centre, enabling them to make the difficult yet vital transition to independent living.
We also support a smaller women's co-operative, Malabar Memsahib Welfare, which makes fairtrade lingerie for selling to shops in the UK and via the website www. Keralacrafts. Co. Uk
