Alhijra Somali Community Association

Alhijra is a charity organisation committed to reducing inequalities faced by the disadvantaged groups. We work especially but not exclusively with Somalis, Turkish, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, black African and Caribbeans who living in Haringey area. We address health, social care, employment , educational and recreational needs by helping our clients become more self-confident, healthier and economically stronger. We promote unity and sense of community, enabling improved integration into wider society.

We provide:
• Confidential information and advice in areas of welfare benefits, immigration, housing, education, employment by the provision of counselling and translation services.
• Recreational activities especially sports for young people in order to minimise the use of Kat and illegal drugs, and also to create an environment which encourages cultural harmony and reduce racial tension.
• A meeting place (Community Hub) for adults and young people in order to alleviate isolation and provide an opportunity for mutual support
• Supplementary weekend classes - Maths & English KS1, KS2 & KS3
• Free ICT training to all users
• Free Job search facilities
• Employment advice and help back to work

Alhijra is dedicated to breaking down isolation and combating alienation and despair amongst young refugees and their families by supporting opportunities for their development.

We aim to create an environment of friendship and belonging where all gain strength and power, collectively and as individuals, through creative learning, sports, work and volunteering.
