Downs Syndrome Research Foundation UK

We are a Registered medical research charity founded in 1996 with the objective to get research underway to help children and adults who have Down syndrome

Founded 1996

  • Mission statement

Our mission is to speed medical research to develop interventions & medicines to alleviate the medical, physical, developmental, cognitive and memory conditions associated with Trisomy 21 which causes all of the outcomes which are collectively described as Down’s syndrome which is a medical diagnosis & is not a fixed condition. Many aspects of Down syndrome are treated very successfully with modern medicine this includes some cures - heart surgery for heart problems, eye glasses for sight problems, antibiotics for more frequent illness, and even cures of more frequent leukemia. Only a few challenges remain and these children can have normal lives. Research to prevent premature aging will help us all and so will the research to preven early onset of dementia and Alzheimer's. We provide Bright Beginnings a new parent booklet that has vital information for parents. Our charity has an understanding of the challenges We have a dynamic, realistic but hopeful view of the potential of good medical research for people with T21. We are leading the way in promoting and facilitating medical research for T21 in the UK & the rest of the world. We are a Pro-Life organization we do not support screening programs that target these children, identifying them before they are born, then advocate terminations. These babies are valuable members of the human race, they teach us a great deal about love, caring, sharing and tolerance, they are a blessing and they make us special people.
