The Book Trade Charity is the trade’s welfare charity, offering financial help and/or housing to people who have worked in the trade for at least a year, in publishing, distribution or bookselling

  • Mission statement

    The Book Trade Charity (BTBS),the trade’s welfare charity, offers help to anyone who has worked in the trade for more than one year (employed, self-employed or freelance) in a range of roles across publishing, distribution and bookselling and who has a problem, whether personal, financial or health-related.
    We offer direct financial assistance to individuals in need through its Grants programme, giving £100,000 each year and subsidised housing for up to forty people at Kings Langley in Hertfordshire.
    We help some 200 people a year, in circumstances which include disability, long-term or terminal illness, redundancy, debt including rent arrears, poverty or carer situations. We also assist unemployed people from the trade by funding re-training courses to allow them to get back into the job market.

    The Book Trade Charity (BTBS) aims to:

    • To relieve persons who are in conditions of need, hardship or sickness and to relieve the distress caused thereby through the provision of welfare
    • To facilitate or provide education and training so as to promote the study, knowledge and appreciation of literature, publishing and the Book Trade and for the benefit of individuals in the trade
