The Haileybury Youth Trust

HYT alleviates poverty in Uganda through programmes of training, education and environmentally-friendly construction. Sustainable development in meeting basic needs is central to HYT's growing work.

Founded 2006

  • Mission statement

HYT's objective is to provide sustainable interventions to improve health, education and training and employment prospects among impoverished young people in Uganda.

HYT aims to achieve these objectives by:

    * undertaking the building or refurbishment of schools and other buildings and facilities that will enhance health, sanitation and educational provision in Ugandan villages

    * training young Ugandans to undertake this building work, equipping them with appropriate construction and business skills that will lead them to generate income and employment opportunities independently of HYT

    * by increasing environmental awareness and the benefits of appropriate and sustainable development.

These objectives will be met using HYT's low-carbon, environmentally-friendly construction technology, the Interlocking Stabilised Soil Block; a technology that preserves the environment, rather than damages it.

HYT will equip a growing number of trained builders and masons, who will have the skills to build homes for themselves, using sustainable and appropriate materials, contribute to the economic and educational development of their own communities and contribute to HYT's wider activity in Uganda.

  • Aims

The Haileybury Youth Trust aims to:

    • HYT aims to develop livelihoods by equipping Ugandans with skills in an environmentally-friendly construction method and encouraging the wider adoption of its appropriate, low carbon technology
    • HYT also aims to improve educational opportunity by developing infrastructure in Ugandan schools, using HYT-trained builders, drawn from the community with whom the charity is working.
    • HYT aims to improve water and sanitation in impoverished communities, by means of the installation of rainwater harvesting tanks, shower blocks and latrines, constructed in a carbon saving technology
