East Suffolk Association For The Blind

ESAB is an independent, voluntary organisation that has been directly promoting the welfare and social inclusion of blind and partially sighted people within East Suffolk since its inception in 1914.

Founded 1914

  • Mission statement

ESAB offers a range of direct front-line support services and assistance programmes for the Blind & visually impaired that are not available from any other organisation or statutory body within our area.

ESAB complements the work done by the Suffolk County Council Sensory Services team, essentially addressing an ever widening gap of social welfare and exclusion for those who have become housebound or disadvantaged through deteriorating eyesight. The geographical area covered is from Lowestoft in the north to Shotley and Felixstowe in the south, and from the east coast westwards as far as Eye.

We offer a multitude of services including; Community Workers, who visit visually impaired people in their own homes to assess their needs and who then assist in implementing an appropriate action plan, alongside this we provide District based social and sporting groups that meet on a regular (monthly) basis for those who are mobile enough to attend same and organise outings to ensure members maintain an element of social interaction and interest. These social and sporting activities are supported by a dedicated team of volunteers who provide not only the one to one support the visually impaired often need but also transport to and from events.

Many of our members are housebound and have little or no regular contact with their families and considerable numbers reside in rural locations where transport infrastructure does not meet their needs leading to social exclusion in many cases.
