We operate and preserve the historic steam tug Kerne from our base on the River Mersey. We sail the vessel to locations in the North of England and open the the public to demonstrate steam technology

  • Mission statement

    Our mission statement is build around our charitable objects which are:-
    To promote for the benefit of the public the preservation and maintenance of the historic steam tug Kerne.
    To advance the education of the public in the science, technology and use of steam power in general and its application to marine in particular.
    We organise the operation of the charity to raise sufficient funds to ensure the Steam Ship Kerne is maintained in seaworthy condition. The members sail the vessel to various venues where the Kerne is opened to the public and a range of demonstrations and tutorials on coal fired steam technology are presented. Our objective is to exhibit the Kerne to as wide an age range as possible and to accommodate the full extent of cultural and technological interests.

    • To promote for the benefit of the public the preservation and maintenance of the historic steam tug Kerne. The public benefit from being able to visit the only working coal fired steam harbour tug.
