Charity information

Hinksey Sculling School Ltd.

In 1994 Sports Match granted an award to Headington School, the Oxford Girls Public School, for 6 small sculling boats on the understanding that the grant eventually found its way into the "Community".
These boats are still used on Hinksey Lake in Hinksey Park. They, conveniently, fit onto racking in a store at the South Oxford Community Centre, to whom we remain hugely indebted for this facility.
HSS was formed as a Community Sculling Club in 1998 with a few children of City of Oxford Rowing Club coaches as the first members.
In 2011 there are approaching 140 “Community” members from all walks of life
In addition to the SOCA operation we are also indebted to the Oxford City Council for access to changing and shower facilities in their swimming pool complex.
The Hinksey lake operation now forms the HSS “Nursery” in a still water environment enabling athletes to move to the river operation at Godstow with a full single sculling skill acquired without flowing water or time pressure.
The Godstow operation is also only possible due to the generosity of the St Edward’s School and their Boat Club staff, in particular, who enable the priceless access to the river.
