  • Mission statement

    Bridging the Gap (BTG) is a Registered Charity No:1099340 and a Company Limited by Guarantee No: 4852534. BTG has three Trustees, a full-time Director, a Penpal Coordinator and a further network of volunteers all over the UK. BTG aims to help reduce re-offending by helping discharged prisoners settle into their communities after release. To continue... The work begun in the early 1970s by Thelma White, a humanist who began befriending people released from prison; she realised that the help they needed was often not readily available. BTG caters to prisoners before and after release, prisoners' families, prison and probation staff, students, academics and interested members of the public.
    BTG's Penpal Scheme facilitates and oversees some 1000 prisoner pen pals.

    • We have pre-release programmes, and run a penpal scheme, periodic writing competitions, life skills training etc.
    • We offer a comprehensive range of advice for releasees, guide them to accommodation, training and employment, and a crime-free life within their communities.
