Friends Of St Josephs School For The Hearing Impaired Makeni Sierra Leone

Friends of St Joseph’s School for the Hearing Impaired was set up to provide much needed financial and practical support for the children and staff of a very special school in Makeni, Sierra Leone.

Founded 2011

  • Mission statement

Friends of St Joseph’s School organises a number of fundraising activities throughout the year, and assists the administrators of the school in sourcing funding for self-sustaining and other projects.
The school has provided care and special education for deaf and hearing-impaired children from across Sierra Leone for more than 30 years. It is the only one in Sierra Leone or in West Africa offering primary education and language acquisition according to the Maternal Reflective Method. The students are also encouraged to develop their lip-reading skills.
There are over 250 students aged between 3 and 18 at the school, run by a committed staff of teachers, carers and administrators. All the students are permanently and severely hearing impaired, some since birth, others due to illness. As in many developing countries, disabled children in Sierra Leone are often socially marginalised; some are even rejected by their families. St Joseph’s School aims to combat this stigma and enable hearing-impaired children to take their rightful places in society by providing a rigorous academic education and by teaching vocational skills that will allow them to become active members of the working world.
The government will only fund the teachers’ salaries and parents are encouraged to make some financial contribution to their child’s education. However, as most students come from very poor backgrounds, these contributions tend to be small or non-existent.
