Pegasus offers innovative theatre and participatory arts promoting social inclusion. Our youth arts projects encourage exploration and high quality theatre. We mentor emerging artists and companies.

  • Mission statement

Pegasus is a place where children, young people, professional artists and local people meet, share stories and make theatre.

Originally established in the very diverse community of East Oxford in 1962, through the passion of a handful of adults and a greater number of young people, Pegasus today is an example of best professional practice in youth arts. Last year we worked with over 9,000 young people at the theatre, in schools and community centres.

Today we combine youth arts with a professional performance programme and the development of training and support schemes for young people, technicians, artists and companies on the first steps of their career path in the arts and general theatre practice.

Our Creative Learning Teams provide projects designed to give young people the experience of creating high quality shows together, understanding and supporting each other and exploring themes or ideas from a new perspective. Projects are open to people from the age of 6 to 19 years and most lead to fully staged productions at Pegasus alongside the professional performances.

Young people remain at the heart of Pegasus and a Members Committee made up of 10 to 19 year-olds are fully involved in the management and decision making here with young trustees full members of the board of directors. Their experiences give them confidence, decision making skills, and a greater ability to be young leaders as well as pass on their skills to others.
