ICONic is a flagship project of Perthshire Big Tree Country, managed by The Perth & Kinross Countryside Trust.

Founded 1997

  • Mission statement

The Perth & Kinross Countryside Trust works in partnership to develop and deliver world-leading, locally rooted projects that provide and improve access to the countryside for all - and that celebrate and promote the region's very great natural heritage and legacy.

The iCONic Project (Internationally threatened CONifers In our Care) has been established to help save some of the world’s most threatened conifers, by collecting seeds and creating safe-havens for young trees in the forests, gardens and estates of Perthshire, Big Tree Country.

It is linked to the International Conifer Conservation Project at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and delivered in close partnership with key collaborators including Forestry Commission Scotland.

iCONic is working to create living gene banks of threatened conifers, by collecting seed in native forests and growing on young trees to plant in conservation groves and selected specimen planting sites throughout Perthshire. These new collections will contain a wealth of genetic diversity, and can be drawn upon in the future to help restore depleted forests around the world.
